maxydu Posted May 23, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 23, 2012 Cruising from Norfolk to the Bahamas soon. I was wondering if the "normal" data plan, cell, & messaging is available while cruising and international while docked in the Bahamas or is it all international roaming rates? Anybody have any experience with this? Thanks

Anybody have any experience with this? Thanks When you leave the country, which you will on the cruise, you will either turn you phone off, save a ton of money, keep it on and buy a international data plan from you carrier, which would be good in the Bahamas, and/or buy an internet package for WiFi use on your phone while on the ship. Multiple options, all extremely expensive.
debee1015 Posted May 23, 2012 #3 Share Posted May 23, 2012 Who is your carrier, the info is specific to the carrier? For example: Verizon has a global data plan which you could use, its $25 for so many MBs. But if you're in Nassau my understanding is the Starbucks near the port has free wifi (and they sell crack... I mean coffee). Text messages I think are $.50 each no matter where you are on Verizon. Here's there info: http://businessportals.verizonwireless.com/international/Cruise_Ships/index.html
maxydu Posted May 23, 2012 Author #4 Share Posted May 23, 2012 I guess the question is when do we leave the country. Obviously when we're in the Bahamas but otherwise we're right off the coast!
CapeCodCruiser Posted May 24, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 24, 2012 Shortly after you leave port the ship will turn on its tower which is hooked to Cellular at Sea. Cellular at Sea is billed through all the major cell providers at a rate you can find on your providers website or by call their customer service. When docked you will use whatever local service which is Intl roaming for most islands. You will probably need to have Intl roaming turned on on you phone to use it. You can also find the Intl roaming rates from your cell provider Verizon is 1.99 from the Bahamas Here is Verizons for cellular at sea Voice Roaming Rate: $2.49 per minute Text Messaging Rates: $0.50/address sent $0.05/message received Global Data Monthly Access $25 Rate after allowance $25/100MB Pay As You Go: $0.02/KB ($20.48/MB) Allowance 100MB
