Rome without the Vatican

I found out we'll be in Rome on Aug 16th which is part of the Assumption holiday -- and the Vatican won't be open. I'm not sure what else may be closed that day.

 

What are other sites people highly recommend?

you can only ever scratch the surface in Rome on a one day visit-dont worry about museums being closed-the whole city is an outdoor museum!

The Vatican Museum may be closed..but I doubt St Peter's is closed..it is a Holy Day...people go to Church.

 

Many posters confuse the Vatican (Museums) with St Peter's Basicilica.
