caye caulker & shark ray alley on our own.. recommendations please

We are looking at taking a water taxi to caye caulker, then hiring a guide there to take us out to hol chan/shark ray alley to swim with the sharks, then go back to the caye to spend the rest of the day exploring the town and playing on the beach. I would prefer to do this on our own as oppose to hiring a tour company because we are not interested in the 2nd snorkeling stop and would like to spend more time on the caye than what the tour operators seem to offer.

Has anyone done this before ? Can you give us some advice or tips, how about guide recommendation on caye caulker to shark-ray?

Why not use Coral Breeze Tours for this tour which starts at the Tourist Village ?

Look up their site for all of this info.

I considered that,I've read their tours feel rushed and also a bit "too guided". Alsot they make two snorkel stops and don't spend much time on the caye. Since we have two non swimmers with us, I don't want to be apart from them for long. We are in port for 8hrs. The coralbreeze tour is only 4hrs long. Ideally I would like to spend 1hr on the shark/stingray thing and at least 4hrs on the caye exploring and hanging on the beach. That may be cutting it close though. Also, I prefer small groups.

Just be careful about getting back. The ferry sailings are said to be less-than-punctual and if they're full, you're left at the dock. Flights to Belize City are relatively limited (compared to BZE). Except for beach, eating or drinking time, 4 hrs is Caye Caulker is way too much time for simply exploring (and I stayed there for 3 nts).

tropic air has flights at least every other hour to Caye Caulker.
