"Copenhagen for a day" recommendations, please

Hi,

 

We will be getting off the Voyager in Copenhagen and we fly to London that night on a 7:30 British Airways flight. Can anyone help me figure out what would be the best use of our time, late morning and afternoon, in Copenhagen? Do you think we can leave our luggage with the ship until we leave for the airport? And what time should we plan on leaving for the airport for a 7:30 flight? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My own suggestions would be similar to Cruise Copenhagen's: Walk past the royal palace on the edge of Nyhavn, wander through the Nyhavn district, walk the length of the Stroget pedestrian shopping street, and possibly visit Tivoli Gardens for a few hours.

As for parking your luggage, I'd suggest storing it at the train station and catching a train to the airport later. How far in advance you should go to the airport depends on how cautious you are, but I'd allow at least 90 minutes from time your train to the airport departs. (More is better, and you can always kill time in the airport shops if you have time to spare.)

The highlight of Copenhagen is Tivoli - the amusement park in the center of town, between City Hall and the train station. Don't miss it. It is Wonderful Copenhagen! The shopping on the Stroget is also very special - visit Illums Bolighuis and see what Danish modern is all about. Those two could easily fill a day. The Museum of the Danish Resistance is my favorite Copenhagen museum - with exhibits on how the Danish Jews were smuggled out of the country.

I'll offer an alternative suggestion. If you can park your luggage (don't know how to advise you on this point), I'd either get a city map and walk, walk, walk to the places that interest you most or take one of the hourly bus tours of the city and, after that, one of the hourly boat tours of the city. You'll get a great sense of this marvelous city either walking or combining bus and boat. Unless you really like amusement parks, I'd recommend you pass up Tivoli. It is a truly great amusement park, but just that.

If you are able to bike, rent a bike. Copenhagen is a "flat city" and you can be like a local and cover lots of ground by bike. In one day you can see one of the castles, Rosengard I think it is called, then bike to Christiania, walk the bike along Stroget, bike to the little mermaid. All this can be done in one day. I did last August, but that's because I biked. There are special bike lanes in Copenhagen, just join the fun.
