TS / Hurricane Ernesto

Ernesto, now a category 1 hurricane, will be hitting the shores of Majahual this evening. This is very far away and the projected trajectory seems to indicate that the storm will cross the peninsula, to emerge near Campeche somewhere. When it hits land it will lose strength and be a mild nuisance only for the folks living inland.

When we do get hit on this side of the coast, we evacuate the towns along the Gulf and move people inland. Stock up on water, candles, batteries, canned goods and so on. Tape up windows and ride it out. Our houses here are mostly concrete block so damage is limited to plants, trees, glass, signs and so on and those houses that are made of sticks, tarps, tin roofs etc. will get blown down.

As for cloudy or rainy weather, locals deal with it by continuing to do whatever they do every day. Tourists may go to the malls and casinos in Merida, or perhaps visit and swim in underground cenotes further inland. Chilling in a bar is also fun, watching the rain outside and getting pleasantly plastered. :)

Hope this helps!

We did this very thing last time through...except we didnt really get plastered. The day was beautiful on the beach for a couple hours, then a sudden rain squall came in off the water, and we all moved from Buddys area on the beach to the bar. It got a little crowded in there, but believe me...A good time was had by all!! They kept passing around free tequela shots which sort of enhanced the mood too. We had a good time, and when the short storm passed by the great weather returned and we moved back on the beach!! It was another good day in Progreso for us. We'll be back in November...looking forward to it ' con mucho gusto'!!!!:)
