What to see in Messina for 1-2 hours

We're doing the ship's self guided tour of Taormina and should return by 4pm Rather than get straight back onboard (sail at 7pm) Is there anything to see in Messina close to port

You will be docked right in the city itself and it is an easy walk across the street to start looking at the local city sites. The 2 most often mentioned nearby sites are the Astronomical Clock Tower and the Cathedral (Duomo). Both of these are very walkable from the ship and very near each other. Once you've found those, you'll see that you can easily walk around the area and enjoy the time before departure.
