Phone Call from a Princess Ship

Hi All

Got a phone call from a friend onboard a Princess ship,

due to the sat delay, it was like a scene from a comedy show

as one of us was answering one question just as the other was asking another

so question if using a mobile has no real problems, how does the ships own system have such issues, is it just out dated, or is it completely different to the sats used by mobile phones

Cell phones don't go through satellites, they use cell towers which connect right in to the land based telephone network. There are cell phones that connect directly to satellites, but they have a very noticeable bulky antenna attached to the phone.

The delay is caused by your cell phone connecting to the ships cell system which connects to a satellite which connects to the "system" of the satellite owners which then connects to the telephone network on land.

Going through a satellite introduces a noticeable delay in voice. Also depends on how many calls are being sent through the satellite.
