Nodakboiler Posted September 16, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 16, 2012 My DW and I are considering a river cruise. We are experienced ocean cruisers. MY DW is a fairly picky eater. Are there many options on the menu? If you want, can you have grilled chicken or a steak at dinner instead of fancier food with sauces, etc. Thanks for the help. Riversedge Posted September 16, 2012 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2012 Perhaps this will help. This is copied from a menu on the Viking Freya: First Course: Hungarian Farmer Plate Melon Cocktail Assorted Mesclun Lettuce Roasted Eggplant and Garlic Soup Main Course: Grilled Pork Medallion "fogash" Balaton Lake Perch Pan Seared Three Lentil and Vegetable Soup Desserts: Crepes filled with nuts and raisins with chocolate sauce Melon Sorbeet with Port Wine Marinated Melon Tokajer Wine Moussee with Caramelize Walnuts Cheese Plate: Cambozola Comte Bonifaz Cheeze Always available: Caesar Salad Parmesian shavings, garlic croutons Grilled Fillet of Salmon Dill butter Pan Roasted Chicken Breast Rosemary Gravy Charbroiled New York Cut Sirloin Steak herb butter You can order as many of the things on the menu as you would like. There is a lunch menu also which is different daily and there are always buffet items available as well.
sk8teacher Posted September 16, 2012 #3 Share Posted September 16, 2012 In addition, if the dinner has some sort of "special sauce" that you do not want, simply tell them to leave it off. I have done that many times on Viking and never had a problem. Cheers,
Riversanddale Posted September 16, 2012 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2012 As replies have noted, chicken and steak are always options. We found the sauces light and most often just on the plate. Watch for those labeled with glazes which tended to be heavier and actually on the food. You can certainly request items without. Go to Google and search "Flickr Viking Idun" for photos which include some menus and foods from our spring trip. I'm still adding to them.
rjscott Posted September 16, 2012 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2012 As sk8teacher has said, with the sauces, you could ask for it to be left off. But, your your DW could also ask for the sauces to be served on the side, so that she could at least try it and see if it was something she might like. Our waiter was very good at offering to do this for the "picky eaters" at our tables. ;)
