I was able to watch the Vision go through the Gutun locks....but missed the centennial bridge shot and miaflores locks. I love modern technology. We did thr partial transit on the jewel couple years ago and one of these years we need to do the full transit. Great job Jim!

 

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do you do a "partial transit" through the canal?

We took a partial transit in 2008 on Brilliance of the Seas. The ship went through the 1st set of locks into Gatun Lake. If you had an excursion scheduled you could get off the ship there and meet up with the ship later.

The ship did not go through any of the other locks.

Trainman is going on a full transit through all of the locks from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

I don't believe RC does a partial transit any longer. Some one will correct me if I am wrong.

Hi J & J - Again thanks so very much for doing this, I'm not only being entertained, but also educated! I have learned more about the Panama Canal the past couple of days than I learned my whole life.

Wish I could sit down and share some of that great food with you, yum. And just have a nice chat.

The ship only goes through the first locks into Gatun Lake and then turns around and goes back through the locks and docks in Colon, Panama. While in Gatun Lake some passengers take excursion from there on a ferry boat all the way through the canal to the pacific and a bus takes you back to the ship in Colon. This is one terrific trip, not to be missed if you do a partial. :)

I would just love to tell you that you are wrong! Sadly you are not wrong!! They stopped the partial transits somewhere around 2009 or '10.

When the ships go through the Panama Canal, it is similar to a sea day. Activities are very much like a sea day with the shops open as they would normally be on a sea day. Same with the casino.

 

As the others stated, the partial transit is going through the Gatun locks, then turn around in the lake, and go back through the other way. Then, we docked in Colon, Panama, to do some shopping, and pick up the folks that got off at Gatun lake to do some of the ship excursions.

 

We were on Jewel of the Sea, and if I remember correctly, one of my Jewel cruises was with the famous "Trainman". It was either our 8 night Jewel Caribbean cruise in 1/29/05, or our Jewel 10 night Panama partial transit in 11-7-08. We had several wonderful talks in the Diamond Lounge during the Diamond Event. Maybe Jim will remember which cruise he was on!

I read the first part of your post and panicked wondering what I had said that was so wrong. I got a good laugh after that.

I always assumed that they stopped the partial transits because of the construction. But we all know what assumption does.

I do know that it costs the ships a lot of money to transit the Canal. I don't recall the exact amount but I know it was significant.

And I agree, the Panama Canal is a wonderful cruise experience. Would love to take a full transit sometime after construction is complete.

Cruise ships pay the most. They per passenger. Most cruise ships pay between $300,000 and $450,000 per transit. Also, cruise ships are among the fist ships to enter the canal in the morning.
