konthego Posted May 23, 2005 #1 Share Posted May 23, 2005 i see Carnival has the Altun Ha and River Wallace tour for $73. Are there any independent tour groups who do this trip?
mnsawyer Posted May 23, 2005 #2 Share Posted May 23, 2005 We were on the Glory 4/9 and did Goff' Caye but wondered about this tour since it sounds really good. I don't think there is any independent that does these two specifically. Would like information too!
rdytocruz Posted May 23, 2005 #3 Share Posted May 23, 2005 Go with the ship's tour. We went in November and it was wonderful. They cut the time really close and with as much to see as there is, I would have been afraid of missing the ship. We had excellent guides and would go again in a minute! mnsawyer Posted May 25, 2005 #5 Share Posted May 25, 2005 Was there a problem with bugs,e tc.,? Also, what about lunch? Understand it's a local lunch...chicken, rice, etc. Was it okay? What about restroom breaks along the way? Thanks!
bandtaxi Posted May 26, 2005 #6 Share Posted May 26, 2005 We took this tour in April and loved it. We did not buy the lunch, although those that did said it was good. We took some snacks along, bought a pop at the stop and then ate when we returned to the ship. We had no bug problems in April and there was only one restroom stop. It was when we got off the river, had a chance to shop and buy lunch before getting on the bus to go to the ruins. We bought a beautiful wooden carved cup and plate to use for communion at church. TexasAlexus Posted June 12, 2005 #8 Share Posted June 12, 2005 We did this tour last week when we sailed on the Elation. It was $69.00 for adults and $54.75 for children. We felt like it was worth every penny. We normally don't take ship sponsered tours, but we really thought this one sounded good and we could not do it independently. It was about 6 1/2 hours long. They divide the group in half and one half does the ruins tour first and one half does the river boat first, so there are about 40 people on your tour. We went to the ruins first (about a 45 minute bus ride)and there were no other guests. We were able to see everything up close and we climbed the tallest ruin. There are quite a few structures there, and we did not have any problem with bugs biting. We then got back in the bus (no air-conditioning, they claimed it was broken) and drove to the river (about 35 minute drive). At the river there was time for a bathroom break, some shopping and lunch. The lunch was $5.00 for chicken, rice and salad. The river ride was amazing. It was about an hour and a half long, as they take the time to locate the wildlife and will circle back to be sure everyone gets to see. They were extremely good about this, so we tipped extra at the end of the trip. We saw howler monkeys, bats, iguanas, exotic birds, manatees and a mother dolphin and her baby, and a crocodile. The dolphins at one point were racing along side of our boat. It was so amazing. The mantees were really tough to see, because they just poke their faces up out of the water every few minutes, but it was well worth the wait to watch for them. Even the river was gorgeous and lined with lush forest and palm trees. At the end of the river they take the boat out to the open sea and gun it. It was really fun and refreshing. Be sure to look off to the right and watch the small airplanes taking off over the water. They are so low you can see the people's faces in the windows ( They looked at little frightened!!!) They deliver you back to the dock, just steps away from the tender. There is a small bar there, that sits out over the water, and it is a great place to get a cold drink. We have done many things on shore doing our nine cruises, and this shore excursion was right up there as one of our all time favorites.
