Good area to stay with in 2 hours of Port of New Orleans

I booked a last minute cruise and it is the weekend of the Jazz festival. I am having a very hard time finding a hotel to stay the night before the cruise. Where would be a good, safe place a little ways out from the city. I am coming from Tennessee. Has anyone parked at the port? Parking safe and secure? I would be thankful for any input. I have never sailed out of NOLA

I'm also coming from Tennessee. I think we may actually stay in Jackson, Mississippi on our way down. it's a three hour drive and we can have a ncie dinner at one of the many resturants the night before. Just requires an early start the next morning. I suggest the Hilton Jackson or the Embassy Suites Ridgeland, MS.
