hiring a taxi for island tour

Hi, we're cruising to St Thomas in Dec. From what I read, there's no taxies that would take cruise passengers for a private island tour, but they're rather minivans that transfer a small crowd from the pier to another point (e.g. Magen's bay). Is that true? If not, has anyone hired one for an island tour? About how much do they charge per hour?

There are some cars that are used as taxis, and they have to adhere to the same rates as other taxis. You can google to find the taxi rates on St Thomas, and you can google for the VI Taxi Association to inquire about a small vehicle.
