Things to do in Ketchikan

Saxman Native Village is interesting especially if you want to see the totem poles and learn about the Native people. There is also Totem Bight State Park. Both of these are located a little bit out of town, so you need to either take a shore excursion or find some sort of transportation there.

Walk up Creek Street, which is the former Red Light District in Ketchikan. Also you can visit Dolly's House, she is the infamous Madam of Ketchikan.

This year when I go, I plan to take ride the funicular for $2 to the top where the Cape Fox Lodge is. Apparently the view from the top is pretty good and you can't beat $2. Also there is a fish ladder where you can see the salmon as they go to spawn.

If you want something more out of town, try a floatseeing trip out to Misty Fjords National Monument.

Or if you want an entertaining introduction to Ketchikan, also try the Ketchikan Duck tour.

Lastly, there is also the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show which is entertaining, especially for people who like watching this kind of stuff on the Outdoor Life Network or on ESPN.

Would appreciate your experience, impressions, suggestions on tours you'd recommend.

In case you might be interested in fishing, Ketchikan is known as the Salmon capital. The waters are calmer than other ports; you only need to travel 15 minutes to the fishing ground. Halibut, bottom fish (lingcod, red snapper, etc) and crabs are also plentiful in its waters.

A wonder charter which will take good care of you is True Alaskan Charters. The captain, Bruce Johnstone, will also take you out just to do sightseeing if you would like. The cost is $120/pp for 2 people and $100/pp if you have 4 people for a 4 to 6 hour tour. He also has great knowledge of the area and gives a lot of information. His family lived there for generations.

I highly recommend him. Tell him Hellen referred you and he will take special care of you. His website is http://www.truealaskancharters.com.

:) :)
