Taking the Train to Montreal

At the suggestion of numerous CC members, we took the train from NYC (Penn Station) to Montreal to catch our cruise ship. It was a Montreal to Miami cruise. We loved it but it was not easy. We had to fly into NYC, take a cab to our hotel, get up at the crack of dawn to make the 815 am train departure. There are no longer baggage cars so you have to lug your suitcases onto the car. (there is floor space at one end where you can pile up your bags. We didn't want the hassle so we shipped the big bags ahead to Montreal. BTW don't ask for a handicap seat unless you want to sit facing the rear of the train!

They don't tell you this but you must check in a special Canada desk in the main waiting room before you board.

If we had to do it again, we would fly to Albany, spend the night there (far less hotel costs, same air fare) The train doesn't leave Albany until 11 am. The scenery north of Albany is wonderful and it is where most of the fall color was located. True you'd miss some of the scenic drives along the river but you have the equivalent with the lakes in upstate New York
