PinoyCruiser Posted September 15, 2013 #501 Share Posted September 15, 2013 Cut and paste from a different article, but an interesting read. I've heard from a friend that works onboard that this is very accurate. They also oversee the kids program. Requirements Requirements vary from employer to employer, but ultimately, many cruise directors take a similar route to get their jobs. Education is helpful, but experience trumps schooling. A bachelor’s degree in leisure studies could give you a leg up on the competition and specialized courses in business, management, hospitality or maritime activities can be helpful as well. Many cruise directors transfer in from similar fields. For example, hospitality managers at hotels or restaurants often make a smooth transition to cruise director. Cruise directors usually work their way up through the ranks of a cruise ship and often land the job after working as an assistant cruise director for a number of years. Waiters, DJs, entertainers and event coordinators on a cruise line might eventually become a cruise director as well. Hospitality The cruise director's primary responsibility is the passengers’ welfare and comfort. As such, you're a greeter, a public relations exec, a cheerleader, an event coordinator and a problem solver. Cruise directors interact with hundreds of people per day, making effective communication skills, flexibility and an outgoing personality crucial. Coordinating Events Cruise directors oversee the entertainment and other activities on board. They supervise personnel that provide the entertainment and coordinate various types of activities to make sure the entertainment lines up with guests’ preferences. Cruise directors oversee the musicians, actors, stage managers and staff, lighting and sound crews. They often take the role of master of ceremonies for special parties and select occasions. They have to communicate with the dining crew, the captain and the hospitality crew to keep everything on schedule. Cruise directors monitor guest responses to the entertainment, create plans to improve customer service and coach staff on how to improve the guests’ experiences. Administrative While a good majority of the work involves interaction with guests and crew members, the cruise director also has clerical and organizational responsibilities. In general, they have to keep travel logs, tracking the travel schedule, major events and any accidents, disputes or injuries. It’s the cruise director’s job to oversee a staff that includes making schedules, and doing reviews and evaluations. Budgeting and billing for entertainment and activities also fall under the cruise director’s purview. The cruise director typically reports back to corporate headquarters or the cruise's base for support and direction.
corkpopr Posted September 15, 2013 #502 Share Posted September 15, 2013 I do know that the CD and staff are among the busiest people on the ship. However, we do not like cruise ship entertainment and never go to shows, we do not do trivia contests, bingo, or poolside activities. We would never take kids on a cruise so we do not interact with the kids activities director. Now, the casino, wine program, specialty restaurants we are totally into. This assessment is of course only moho!
Beaver1975 Posted September 15, 2013 #503 Share Posted September 15, 2013 Actually, the CD is responsible for on board activities, entertainment is selected and scheduled by Miami. CD's job is to keep everything moving and he/she is more of an entertainer than manager. Just to add to this...the CD has input into corporate decisions in many cases. And once the talent in onboard the ship, the CD has management and scheduling responsibilities.
GORDONCHICK Posted September 16, 2013 #504 Share Posted September 16, 2013 Wow, I am surprised at almost 500 posts. We never have any interaction with a cruise director and i could not tell you the name of one in 30 cruises we have been on. I find service and facilities to almost always be excellent and the only time i introduce myself to the hotel director or bar manager is to pass on a compliment about a staff member. Last year there was a survey with over 300 postings and it ran about 4-1 with I could care less who the CD or Captain is or was at it has no bearing on the enjoyment of my cruise! Their comments, not mine. I didn't give much thought to meeting such people either - until I did! When I did, they knew me when ever they saw me and my family around the ship. It's amazing how your service goes up a notch in the MDR when the HD decides to join you unexpectedly. Even after that happened, the MDR staff remembered and even set an extra chair at the table in case. I met them at the CC meet & greet (one I was the coordinator). Handy, handy people to know. Necessary? No, but very handy!
AlaskaAtLast Posted September 16, 2013 #505 Share Posted September 16, 2013 Handy, handy people to know. Necessary? No, but very handy! I completely agree! I too was surprised that so many of the senior crew remembered my name after meeting them at the meet & greet. Did it make a difference? Probably not, but it was nice to be remembered and greeted by name.
