Why tip Braiders?

pg.

Recommended Posts

Hi , I know how Americans love to tip, but can anyone here explain to me why you would tip someone for braiding your hair. I'm not talking about when you go to a salon and have it done, since then the braiders is either paying to rent the chair in the salon, or is on a commision and doesn't get the full amount you pay.

I am referring to a post by someone who said she had her two little girls hair braided at the Beach in Jamaica and paid 75 $ for the two of them plus a tip.If your braider is just a wandering hair doer , they get to set their own price and keep all the money minus what they pay for beads( they are dirt cheap )

Seventy five bucks ( even for two) is not cheap, and to make 75 us$ a day is not a bad wage,( and you know they often get more than that in one day) plus they pay no tax on it. So then you add a TIP!!!??? Why???

I just don't get it. I honestly don't , you Americans sure make it hard on the rest of us, since you love to tip so much now everyone is exspected to! Now cut that out!! LOL

oK DONT FLAME ME! WOrd to the wise. Jamaicans see americans coming and going.. All the prices arehighly inflated and I cant see anyone paying so much.

I happen to be african american and Italian (what a mix right? lol) I have ben to jamaica several times and they never even dared ask for that much money. They knew we just would not pay it. I was once traveling with my friend from B.C. and she was quoted 65 dollars and I was quoted 30 dollars and hour later.

tip: if you like the look... place a few braides in your hair before going.. and say no thank you i already have some. icon_smile.gif

I think that once they set the amount, that is your agreed amount. Tipping is not necessary. You would pay for braiding the same way you would pay for a straw hat.

I have super-long hair and always get harrassed about getting my hair braided. I did it once on my honeymoon and my hair was so destroyed that it broke off at the roots--it was pulled so tight! Now I let them put a fabric braid in, underneath my hair, so when I cut it out no one will know!

Our experience with hairbraiding was hubby told a girl to put two braids on each side of our daughter's hair. She charged $4 per braid. Before he knew it she had put 8 braids on one side. None on the other side. He was MAD. He gave her $16 and nothing more. Since he had said FOUR braids total. She did good to get that as she had not listened to what he said. This was in Nassau too-so she understood English. Bye the way I am an middleaged woman with SHORT hair and always get about 10 million different girls asking me if I want my hair braided. So it has nothing to do with long hair or youth.

Sorry if I offended you with my long hair comment, but I didn't say anything about youth.

If the hair braiders see someone with long, thick hair, they see money signs dance before their eyes-- $3.00 per braid, and if they had to make 100 or so braids in my hair that would be $300 US for them.
