We were on the 2005/06 holiday cruise on the Island, but back then it was doing Hawaiian cruises. Five years later, we did the exact same (even starting on the same date) cruise on the Golden.

Princess will have the ship all decorated by the time you board. The Xmas decorations come down on the 26th and are replaced by NY ones. For us, on both the Eves on both sailings, it was a formal dinner night. On NYE, there's parties with live bands all over the ship and a countdown and balloon drop in the grand atrium. And there's no worries about having to get home from a party on roads with people who may have been drinking a bit too much.:D

I did the Christmas/New Year's Canal cruise on the Coral, so some of this review won't apply to you. However, post #23 details a little about the Christmas part of the experience.

We were on that cruise and got off in Maui and got married at the Westin Maui, had our reception on board with guests that didn't cruise (some did cruise with us). We partied it up later by the pool with our cruise guests.

Cruisin' Chick is right about it being very nicely decorated. We recently went back on Island Princess for our honeymoon for a partial transit Panama Canal cruise - it was nicely renovated and the Christmas decorations were still up (we boarded on Dec. 29). You can see pre-New Year's Eve decorations on our review... http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1586027
