What are we missing in San Francisco?

Recommended Posts

We leave next Monday for 3 nights, precruise in SF. Yeah!!! :D We're stay at The Argonaut Hotel in FW. We've already booked the Alcatraz night tour & the Segway tour of Fisherman's Wharf. We also plan to see the sea lions & ride a cable car. Our 13 yo. son really wants to see the murals in the Mission District, but I've read that it's not safe. :( We have dinner reservations at Aqua & The Slanted Door. We don't have plans for dinner the night we go to Alcatraz. Please, list any must-do's that we have omitted. :) FYI, noone in our family enjoys shopping. TIA :)

Not sure if going on a late 1950's fire engine across the Golden Gate appeals? We (inc 8 yo son) did this last summer and thought it was great fun even although it was too misty to see all of the bridge!! Our son was the only child on the tour so it's not just for kids.

Their website is www.fireenginetours.com

We also went to Alcatraz but during the day. Very good tour but very cold outside on the island even in the middle of the day.

There are walking tours you can take to the South of Mission district during the day. Check these out for your son: http://www.sfcityguides.org/descriptions.html#Anchor-MISSION-51540

Here is the fire engine ride mentioned above: http://www.fireenginetours.com/

I would include going up the Coit Tower, and seeing (walk it) Lombard Street, and definately crossing the Golden Gate bridge. Include Muir Woods if you have never seen coastal redwood trees.

Here is a previous post to check out:

I too second Lombard Street. If you have a rental car, its fun to drive down the street. If not its just as nice to drive. If you're there and the flowers are really in bloom, its gorgeous.

Definitely go across the Golden Gate Bridge. Also if you can, the community of Sausolito on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge is nice. There is a nice street that is filled with artsy shops and eateries. Its quaint and relaxing and it has great views back towards the San Francisco skyline.

Also the Palace of Fine Arts is pretty nice too. I beleive they have some sort of astronomy thing there too that is popular with kids.
