Finally, the captain knew it was time to move on, and the male left the boat. The female was not ready to leave, so we went a ways down the river with her.

When the captain pulled close to the shore, she jumped off into a tree and was gone.

When we arrived at Lamanai, lunch was waiting for us. It was chicken, rice with beans, salad, and a spicy pico de gallo made with habaneros.

After a bathroom break, we headed off into the rain forest (yes, bug spray recommended). The first pyramid we came to was the one that gave the ruin the name Lamanai, Sleeping Crocodile.

We then walked through the ball court. The guide told us that they found liquid mercury under the round centerpiece.

Next was the biggest of the pyramids, and the one we got to climb!

There were 34 on the tour, plus the guides. No one else was at any of the sites we visited. There were other people at the lunch area. I don't know if they had already visited the pyramids, or where they came from. We were the only ship that day, so if they had done an earlier tour, then they must have been on a land vacation. Their group was very small; I'd say less than ten.

Anyway, we had the pyramids to ourselves!

Hot? YES! I think I had sweat dripping off my eyelids. At this point I was really glad that I started working out back in January! Not sure I could have done that climb so well in December!

Here's a great idea: make sure you decide to climb a 3500 year old, really steep pyramid holding a water bottle AND a camera! Brilliant!

There are three sets of steps. They are all high steps, but the first set of steps is not super steep. The second is really steep, and you had to literally crawl up them. The third set is not as steep, but you still need to crawl.

Thank you! I believe the couch can be made into a bed? One of our kids slept on a couch/bed on her first cruise, and she said it was just as comfortable as the beds.

Leah didn't want to climb, at first. She was afraid of the height. But once she got to the top, she settled herself on the edge!


For those of you that are Bachelor watchers... this is where Ben took the most annoying Courtney on his season. I'm not afraid to admit that I have watched every single season... The tarantula that she held in the clips at the end of that episode was planted there. I asked. The guide that I asked laughed, and said they do live in the rain forest, but they don't come sit on the pyramid steps. Further proof (not that we really need convincing!) that everything on The Bachelor is FAKE!!! I'll still watch it.

I don't know if our friends want pictures posted, or to be named, so if you guys want me to remove these, let me know! I won't name them, but suffice it to say that we hung out with some awesome people this week!!!

Last, we came upon one slightly smaller pyramid. We were told that the archaeologists had uncovered several layers to this one, and that they had removed the outer, newer, layer exposing the older layer where the faces had been built.

The kids were told they could climb this one, but not the adults, because we are too slow. The guides were always conscious of the time, and it was getting close to the time we needed to head back.

The boat ride back only took 30 minutes. He was flying, and we did not stop, except when we came upon smaller boats.

The bus ride was still an hour, however. The guides were constantly looking at their watches, and keeping us on time. I never felt rushed, and I felt that we had just the right amount of time at the ruins.

We made it back to port with about 45 minutes to spare, plenty of time for a cold Belekin (or two!). We were also able to pick up some more hot sauce.

Girls skipped dinner and had burgers. It was OK; it had been a really long, sweaty day! My favorite day of both cruises, hands down!
