A chair, an umbrella and a beer

Will be in St. Marten in March and will have a morning excursion and be back to the cruise area before noon.

The ladies would like to hit the Phillipsurg boardwalk area for some shopping, they guys would like to find a good beach bar on Great Bay where we can grab an umbrella, chair and beer while the ladies support the local economy.

Any recommendations for such a place?

There are tons, I've been googling. Google Philipsburg St. Maatren boardwalk & look at the pics. I personally can't wait, will be going in May for the 1st time & plan on spending some time lounging near the boardwalk just people watching with a cold beer. The Black Pearl looks fun.

If you are getting back from your tour around noon, great move to head to the town beach. Last year, instead of heading over to Orient, we decided to ferry over to town and hang there for the day and it didn't disappoint. In fact, we found the cheapest beer of the cruise at a boardwalk stand there....$1 a bottle. I'd rent some chairs, umbrella, get a bucket of beers and you're set.

A few tips...being you are getting there noon-ish, you could probably negotiate a better rate for chair/umbrella then if you arrived earlier. Also, the further down the beach you walk the lower the price becomes. You could also walk back to the ship...10-15 minute walk.

This was the same beach area that we stayed at during our last trip. It wasn't too busy and super close to the ship. Other posters have said the water isn't the cleanest but we didn't have any problems. Enjoy your trip :-)

We loved Great Bay - we walked a little further down - had orange umbrellas. I guy named Bernard got the chairs for us and ensured nobody plopped in front of us. We had a beer bucket delivered for $12 for 6 beers (HELLO - awesome!). There was a guy who went to "The Firehouse" and got lunch for us and delivered it to us for a tip.

We loved it there.

Here's Bernard :)

Here's the view from the water taxi - you can see where the orange umbrellas are

Thank you to those of you who responded. We will make great use of your information and know that we will lounge in comfort as the rest of our group hits the shops.

There are numerous beach vendors offering great packages along Great Bay Beach. Just walk along the Boardwalk and find something that looks good.

Negotiate a price if their original offer doesn't meet your expectations, but note that many of the jewelry shops along Frontstreet will offer complimentary beverages to those they determine to be serious shoppers.

Many husbands have been known to hang in the background while their wives peruse the bangles, baubles and diamonds available while downing a nice, refreshing, complimentary cold beer or two.

If you can convince the street-level salesmen at Diamonds International that you're a real deal for a $4-5 digit purchase you may be invited upstairs to the VIP lounge where the good stuff is. Precious stones and top shelf pours available. Free Internet connected computers, too.

Just saying ...
