kayaking in Alaska

Recommended Posts

We have a 15 and 20 year old who REALLY want to go kayaking when we are in Alaska. We don't know a thing about this - which port, which company etc. We will be in Sitka, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchican and Prince Rupert.

Thanks for any help you can give us :)

The most popular place to go kayaking is Ketchikan. You can either book through the ship or independently. The most popular private tour operator is Southeast Kayaks. Great reputation.

Your kids will love the kayaking and no experience is needed. They will get all the instruction they will need when they arrive. I kayaked for the first time in my life in Ketchikan in 2003 when I was 23, it was amazing and I'm so glad I did it. We saw a bald eagles nest, then we saw the bald eagle swoop right over our heads!

We booked with Southeast Sea Kayaks in Ketchikan independently. Our 19 and 22 year old sons really enjoyed this, too -- it was the first time we went kayaking. They met us at the dock and made sure that we got back to our ship in time (we arrived an hour late in Ketchikan, and all the excursions were backed up). We saw stellar sea lions and bald eagles. They only take a maximum of 6 people out at a time. We had 2 guides for the four of us. It was a wonderful experience.

The people at Southeast Sea Kayaks were great. We'd book through them again.
