eenytoo Posted April 30, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 30, 2004 I haven't had much luck with this question, but since we are leaving next week I thought I'd try 1 more time -- does anyone know where I can stock up on French wine when in port in Villefranche at the beginning of our cruise? Merci.

eenytoo Posted April 30, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted April 30, 2004 Actually I'm not concerned with the quality but rather with finding the store in the first place! In the end, it's probably one of those things we'll just have to look for once we're there. -Serena

I can't give you the name of a store, but I have bought wine in Nice, and Menton and I am sure Villefranche will have wine shop probably in the center of town.Sorry I could not be of more help. You won't have a problem finding one.Enjoy your cruise.. PS..if you want a nice white try Sancerre. finallyavacation Posted May 3, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 3, 2004 What cruise are you on? We are on the Splendour departing Barcelona May 15th. and our second stop is Villefranche. If you are jump on the RC Roll Call for our ship. We are organizing a meet and mingle. I am working on an excursion for that port. Any suggestions? Andym Posted May 3, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 3, 2004 eenytoo, You could try to find a cave (pronounce 'CAV'). These places let you sample the wine before you buy. I have left a many of these places with some of the best wine we have ever had and for some of the best prices. Also by the time you have finished you are well cooked. Andym Posted May 3, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 3, 2004 Just found this http://www.villefranche-sur-mer.com/ Click on Plan Ville, then Acheter,Then Supermarche SPAR. Usually these places have excellent wines at bargain prices.
LEtue Posted May 3, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 3, 2004 My son and I were on a simialr mission when we sailed on the Splendour 12 day itinerary in 2000. Our second stop was Villefranche and we set out to find a local grocery store. We found one on a steet that ran parallel to the harbor front. I remember climbing a short set of stairs with shops on either side and then made a right down what appeared to be a main street. The grocery was just a little ways down on the right. There may be others and we found the best deals were where the locals shopped. Good luck and enjoy your cruise! BTW - train service here is excellent and we traveled between Nice and Monoco with ease Linda Carnival Miracle 11/07/04 Jewel of the Seas 11/20/04 - Thanksgiving Journey on the Jewel http://www.cruisecritic.com/interests/groups.cfm?ID=47 Brilliance of the Seas 6/5/05 - Mediterranean http://www.cruisecritic.com/interests/groups.cfm?ID=
eenytoo Posted May 3, 2004 Author #10 Share Posted May 3, 2004 Thanks to everyone for the good advice. It sounds like we are set. BTW, we are on the Millenium sailing on May 9 and also plan on doing this port independently. -Serena
