tipster42 Posted June 8, 2005 #1 Share Posted June 8, 2005 We're sailing on the Enchantment of the Seas in July with a Party of 6. I had e-mailed Jonathan Duru, info@yourcab.ca ,and his tours looked great. However, 2 of us want to shop, one likes galleries and museums, 3 just want to sightsee and get the flavor of the town. My first task when going to a new city, is to pull out the maps and get myself oriented. Questions: 1. Can anyone tell me where the cruise ships dock? It appears to be around Lower Water Street, but the maps I have are not too clear. 2. Is the pier walking distance from downtown. 3. How convenient is public transportation (shuttle buses, day passes, etc), or are we better off taking cabs. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Rick1965 Posted June 9, 2005 #2 Share Posted June 9, 2005 The cruise dock is on Marginal Rd, which is just off Water St. Here's a map which might help. http://halifaxinfo.com/WaterfrontHRMt.pdf The pier is within easy walking distance of downtown, again check the map. Public transportation is quite close to the dock, but if it's your first visit I might suggest a taxi. Hope this helps some. Rick1965

emalemi Posted June 10, 2005 #5 Share Posted June 10, 2005 Rick-is there a place within walking distance that would be a good spot to buy souvenirs at a reasonable price? I'm sure the shops right along the waterfront might be pricey. Sometimes we find good deals in the local grocery stores, but not sure if this is the case in Halifax. Thanks for any tips! Rick1965 Posted June 10, 2005 #6 Share Posted June 10, 2005 There are quite a few places within walking distance to pick up souvenirs. There is a grocery store just outside the cruise dock. The shops along the water front have good pricing, everything from the very affordable to the high end stuff. Here's a link which may help. http://www.cruisecritic.com/ports/newport.cfm?ID=32#sec1t They only mention Nova Scotia Crystal, but there are a ton of shops in the same area with a wide selection of things for souvenirs. Fran Record Posted June 11, 2005 #8 Share Posted June 11, 2005 Thanks Rick! Both sites gave good info! I know end of Sept can be unpredictable for weather, but what do you think the weather will probably be then?
CruisinBabe Posted June 12, 2005 #9 Share Posted June 12, 2005 Is there a tour guide that gives a narration about the sights and history of Halifax on the hop on/hop off bus?? My sister is visiting Halifax for the first time and would really like a guided, narrated tour of the city.
Rick1965 Posted June 13, 2005 #10 Share Posted June 13, 2005 The weather around that time should still be quite nice. Depending on where your from(southern states) you may find it alittle chilly. We find it just right, enjoying the last of summer and the beginning of fall. But like you say the weather can be unpredictable, so the locals usually tell you "if you don't like the weather wait 10 minutes, it'll change". Here's a link which may help, please note the temps are in metric. I'll give a conversion link as well. http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/stats/pages/C02010.htm http://www.onlineconversion.com/temperature.htm Hope you enjoy your time in our city.
