Newport in CA is a busy beach town as well as a place for very wealthy people to live. There is a wide variety of hotel accomodations in nearly every price range. If price is no issue, you might want to consider the Doryman's Inn, which is right on the beach and an easy walk to shops and restaurants: http://www.dorymansinn.com/ It is very romantic and elegant, and their own restaurant comes highly recommended.
