and I was wondering something. I've heard folks talking about getting a call about upgrading(upselling essentially) the closer it gets to one's cruise. Since I didn't book with a PVP or travel agent, would it still be possible to get a call from Carnival about upgrading to a more expensive cabin? Just curious is all and wondered if anyone knew the answer. Thanks.

I don't think it matters how you booked. The upgrade/upsell Dept is separate.

I can confirm this is true. I booked my Sept 2012 Fascination cruise online at the CCL website & received an upsell call a few weeks before the cruise.
