Turtle and Wildlife Reserve..tour or on your own?

The 2 main things we would like to do when we visit Barbados this September is go the the Wildlife Reserve and swim with the turtles. I have looked into tours that include both of these activities but they are usually associated with other activities and cost close to $124 pp (and are often a full day tour). How feasible is it to try and do this on our own (2 adults 1 toddler) and does any one have any idea on transportation/cost to get around? Which beach would be preferred to swim with the turtles?

Thank you!!!
