Ship to shore phone calls from the middle of the Atlanti

Any problem making a call from the ship while crossing the Atlantic? We will be on the Riviera. What about charges? thanks

If you are referring to using the telephone in your cabin, making a call is fairly easy. The directions for making the call are printed on the ,telephone, just next to the keypad, and the service is very reliable. It is not an inexpensive proposition, however, somewhere in the $8 per minute range, last I checked.

Cellphones are another kettle of fish, and you'd have to ask about connectivity and cost with your Cellphone Service Provider, and then be aware that using the Seamobile service will probably add $3 to $5 per minute to that, dependent on where in the World you are calling.

World wide in fact with very few dead spots and those can be covered now by Sat phones. ( you can buy your own for about$4000 available through marine radio suppliers) I had one wiith my sailboat alond with a SSB single sideband. The work independent of the ship syatems. You are charged by the min for sat time.... and that ain't cheap either.

As for charges I am reminded:rolleyes: of a Woody Allen movie where he is making a long distance call and the operator cuts in and says" your 3 min are up, please deposit 1 million dollars"

Jeanine - Oceania participates, like most cruise lines, in the Wireless Maritime Services system, which allows passengers to use their U.S.-based cell phones onboard the ships. In our experience (Verizon & ATT), the per minute rate is about $2.50, quite a bit less than the ship's direct dial rate. Here is a link to the service:

We have found that the service is deactivated when the ship is in port, in order to not interfere with local service providers. You should check with your cell phone provider to determine whether it offers local service while in port. Of course, on a TA, most of the time you will be out of range of local providers and can simply use the Wireless Maritime service with your cell phone.

Cheers, Fred

Do you have to contact Verizon before you leave to activate service? Thanks.
