Midtown Hotel in New Orleans - Safe? Anyone else stayed here?

Just booked 1 night in September for our cruise on the Conquest.

 

My girlfriend and I are flying in from Chicago on Saturday, just staying the night before we leave for the Caribbean on Sunday. The room is cheap, $50. But we are just looking to explore Bourbon Street and sleep. No amenities necessary. It's only a 4mi cab ride to port in the morning. Has anyone had any experiences with this Hotel or area in general?

Personally, I would not stay here only because of location.

 

From this hotel, anything will be a cab ride, as I would not walk through this neighborhood to get to the Quarter.

 

I would look for something closer to the Quarter, or in the garden district. It will be a little more expensive, but will feel safer and closer to the activities you want to experience, or at least a streetcar ride away.

I would not say the area is not safe, assuming you will not be doing much walking in the area at night. But I would not stay there. The rate tells you something, doesn't it.
