seabreezer Posted May 4, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 4, 2004 Any recommendations for an elegant afternoon tea? I've narrowed the search to Brown's, the Savoy or Claridges and am looking for feedback. Any other suggestions? Also, most require "smart casual" attire. What does that mean? Jacket required? Ms. B Posted May 4, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 4, 2004 Tea at the Dorchester Hotel is VERY nice. Smart casual for tea would mean a jacket. Especially at the Brown or the Dorchester. cberge Posted May 4, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 4, 2004 Re tea..FYI..Brown's is closed or closing for renovations for about a year.I would look into the Savoy for high tea and a jacket would be required. Karen Ü

marilynfaye Posted May 9, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 9, 2004 My husband just gave me the book "1,000 Places To See Before You Die" for Mother's Day. Their recommendation: Tea at the Ritz
seabreezer Posted May 9, 2004 Author #6 Share Posted May 9, 2004 Gee, Is that any Ritz? I just had Mother's Day brunch at the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay and I have had Tea at several Ritz Carltons. Should I cross that one off? Anyway, I heard from a Londoner that THE place for an authentic, not as touristy, Tea in London is Brown's. Too bad if they're closed. I was planning on going to Fortnum and Mason's anyway to stock up on my favorite tea so maybe I should just kill two birds ... marilynfaye Posted May 10, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 10, 2004 Sorry. Can't check it off yet. The article was definately in the England section and had a "London address." Mattsudds Posted May 10, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 10, 2004 My mother is a big fan of afternoon Tea so we have been trying several on special occasions. So far we have tried the Park Lane hotel - very poor, like having tea in a hotel lobby surrounded by football supporters. Claridges - Excellent, music and several courses. Fortnum and Masons - ok but it is effectively a store cafe - albeit a nice one! Ritz - The ultimate. Outstanding selection of Teas, Sandwiches, Cakes and Scones. Pricey (£35 I think) but well worth it. We are now making the Ritz our 'regular'! Book well in advance (at least 2 months, 6 months if you want to go on a Saturday). seabreezer Posted May 14, 2004 Author #9 Share Posted May 14, 2004 So we worked The Ritz Tea into our itinerary for London. The bad news is we have to go to Tower of London first, in the morning, and will have to dress up for the entire day since our base is in Greenwich and we won't have time to go back and change. Hopefully it won't be too hot, although it is July. Anyway, we're looking forward to it and then I can cross it off the list!
