Toulon Port w/ Children

Toulon will be our first port of call on a 12 night Med cruise. I will have my son (11) and daughter (8). Not sure if we should do excursion to surrounding towns (was thinking Hyeres or Mimosa), stay in Toulon or something else. My children do appreciate history (my son is a history buff) and are very active (would not like sitting around at cafe, shopping, etc). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

are you docking in Toulon or La Seyne-Sur-Mer the latter is a few kilometers from Toulon and across the bay and would require transport to get to Toulon
