Fydlstyx Posted April 24, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 24, 2013 I have been looking for a cooking demonstration/culinary tour kind of excursion to do in Grand Cayman in January. Does anyone know of one?
drew sailbum Posted April 24, 2013 #2 Share Posted April 24, 2013 The Cayman Islands have developed a reputation as a foodie destination with some major events designed to draw the culinary aficionado for a stay-over vacation. As of yet, such major events don't seem to cater to the schedule of our cruise ship guests who are only here for a few hours. If you want to consider a stay-over vacation, the premier event of the culinary calendar is the Cayman Cookout, scheduled for January 16-19, 2014 hosted by chef Eric Ripert. It is an opportunity to interact with celebrity guest chefs such as Anthony Bourdain and José Andrés. Truly a unique opportunity full of epicurean delights. The annual Taste of Cayman has many of the island's well known restaurants sampling their creations. This very popular event is scheduled for February 8, 2014 for the coming year. If you are planning a vacation that coincides with this event then be sure to buy your ticket early as it does sell out! If your trips doesn't coincide with one of these major events you still may find a cooking demonstration at one the the restaurants or shops. Cayman Airways Magazine has an article with details and contact information on several of the options. These demonstrations of cooking for fine dining or traditional Caymanian cooking. Finally, any discussion of food in Cayman would be incomplete without a mention of Gladys Howard and her Pirate's Point Resort on our sister island of Little Cayman. (Little Cayman is 90 miles northeast of Grand Cayman. No organized day trips available :( ) Gladys is a Cordon Bleu trained chef and owner of this small resort that attracts guests as much for the scuba diving as for the food. Pirate's Point is a trip unto itself.
