questions regarding 7 mile beach

Can anyone give me info on 7 mile beach... I am wondering if there is an entry fee.. if so is it different for adults and children... also is there are any activities on this beach..

7 mile beach is actually closer to 5 miles long. All the beaches on the Cayman Islands are Public, no charge at all. Some of the hotels will either charge you to use their chairs and facilities or reserve them for guests only. You can take a public bus to the "Public Beach" for $2.50 USD and the rest is free or you can take the bus or a taxi to one of the hotels that charges for their chairs and spend the day there. Most of the hotels have water sports available for a charge. Since 7 mile is a sand beach, do NOT expect any kind of decent snorkeling. Good snorkeling and sandy beaches are mutually exclusive.

 

Now nice the beach is depends on where on it you are. It's like asking: "are there any good books at the Library?", it depends on what you are looking for.

You seem pretty knowledgeable about 7 mile beach and asked "what are you looking for". I'm looking for clean, cornstarch-feeling sand that leads to sandy bottom water with no rocks. What beach would you recommend. We'll be with two elderly ladies so an easy walk is vital. Don't mind paying for lounge chairs and umbrella, a clean bathroom and a place to eat. Does this place exist? What are the charges? How much should the taxi cost?

after reading back thru your response, I do have another question for you and just want to clarify... You mentioned Public beach.. Is this a different beach than 7 mile?? Is there any hotels on 7 mile beach that we could rent the umbrella and chairs from?? Is the name of that other beach called Public?? Just trying to clarify if this is the name of it.. and also is there a place to get drinks on 7 mile beach?

I stayed at the Marriott several years ago - it's got a nice beach, but I don't know if they rent chairs. But they have a bar on the beach and the beach is quite nice there...pretty close to the cruise port as well.

Not necessarily looking for snorkeling.. I just remember 7 mile beach from last year when we passed by it.. We will have kids with us this next time.. they will be ages 7,11,13,14 and 17 so I was trying to find a beach that the adults can sit and relax while watching the kids have fun.. Just trying to find a beach that we can all enjoy..

Public Beach is a section of the overall 7 mile beach. There is no hotel directly behind it, just some parking were a snack truck is often found. There are a couple of covered picnic tables. It is where I met the dive operator I went scuba diving with. Several dive boats pickup divers here. The sand is a nice texture and leads down into the water and continues out quite a ways. There is hardly any rock around so I would bet the snorkeling isn't very good. You need the rock structure in order for coral to grow.

 

It sounds like one of the hotels that will accommodate cruisers would be a good place for both Kellyann and waterbound. The old "Holiday Inn" was recommended often for cruisers, but it is now a Marriot and I do not know their policies regarding renting chairs. If I was in doubt, I'd get a taxi and ask the driver where he thought would be a good place to go. Just tell him you want a nice part of 7 mile where you can rent a chair and get a drink.

Hi - A futher question to 7 mile beach.

I noticed that our cruise company (Carnival) offers 7 mile beach as an excursion for 23 dollars per person and there are 4 of us. It says you make your own way there (extra cost) and they take you to the Beach Club Colony Resort (one complimentary beverage). I can't imagine why the cost would be 23 when you basically only get one drink and you still have to " make your own way"

Is there any advantage to taking the excursion or is there a way to do it more cheaply?

How much shade is there on this long beach? I pressume very few palm trees ? Is umbrella rentals everywhere? I am very worried of getting too much sun.

We were in Cayman last week and here's the scoop. You can take a bus from the pier to Sea Grape beach (the drivers kinda push you there), it's a public beach with a bar and small restaurant and also a nice bathroom. They rent chairs for $8 and umbrellas for $5. The bus cost $5 to get there. The beach is very nice. They also have waverunners, parasailing, etc. When you're finished, vans are waiting to take you back to the pier. The beach is about 5 miles into the 6 3/4 miles long "7 mile beach" area. Donnalb - we took the Carnival 7 Mile Beach excursion. I believe we had to take a taxi for $4 pp. We told the driver what time to pick us up and he was there exactly when we wanted him. When you get there they set up a lounge chaise for you, where ever you want it, and I think it had an umbrella. We had use of the hotel restrooms, and restaurant/bar. I believe we had an wrist band or something to identify us as Carnival cruisers. They chased others away. We felt it was worth it. No one chasing us off their beach because we weren't staying at the hotel. It's a really beautiful beach, very sandy. An inexpensive day to just sit and enjoy the beautiful beach, sun, and sand.

We recently went to '7' mile beach.

 

It was lovely - just what we wanted.

 

We took a taxi for $3.50 each and were dropped opposite the Marriot Courtyard hotel (about 15 minutes).

 

This is Sea Grape beach. There's a beach cafe, chairs for rent and it's just what you expect it to be - white sand etc. There is natural shade at the back.

 

My advice would be to hit the beach, turn right and walk about 50 - 100 yards. Just round a shallow corner is a much quiter stretch of beach and shallow water - ideal for little ones.

 

On the way back we got a public bus for $2.50 each and didn't have to pay for the children because they sat on our laps. This was both a bit cheaper and also more fun - chatting to the locals who are really friendly.

 

If you want to go to 7 mile beach my advice is don't do a tour.
