Archie4 Posted May 7, 2013 #1 Share Posted May 7, 2013 We are trying to plan which days we will do a 'trip' and where we can just go ashore for a walk round / beach visit directly from the ship. So are there any ports of call where getting to a beach / town would not be within reasonable walking distance?
hill6 Posted May 7, 2013 #2 Share Posted May 7, 2013 In Kauai you can walk over to the beach at the Marriott. It is less than 10 minutes from the ship
furgoon Posted May 8, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 8, 2013 Second day in Maui grab a free shuttle to the Queen's mall. Walk to the back of the mall and grab the #10 bus to Kihe beach. It is a two dollar fare or buy a pass for the whole day for $4. There are three beach accesses within walking distance of each other. The bus driver was friendly and dropped us off at the second beach access with restrooms. All aboard for that day is 5:30 so there is plenty of time to spend at the beach for minimal cost. The bus is right across the street in front of the shopping center. Look for the bench near the road in front of the Whaler's general store. It was quite a pleasant beach with lifeguard. Kartgv Posted May 8, 2013 #5 Share Posted May 8, 2013 Kona is a tender port, with the wharf right in the village. It's very walkable, lots of shopping, restaurants, (don't miss having a MaiTai at the Kona Inn) a farmer's market, a historic church and palace - all within a few blocks walk. There's also a tiny beach right at the end of the pier though it gets pretty crowded. There is also a shuttle, the Keauhou Trolley, that runs about 5 miles down Ali'i Drive with stops at a couple of beaches. Last I heard, it was $2/person. It's a nice ride, even if you don't stop at any of the beaches.
luv2travel06 Posted May 9, 2013 #6 Share Posted May 9, 2013 We are trying to plan which days we will do a 'trip' and where we can just go ashore for a walk round / beach visit directly from the ship. So are there any ports of call where getting to a beach / town would not be within reasonable walking distance? We rented a car both days on Maui. We stopped at a couple of beaches for brief periods and could have stayed longer if we had wanted. On the Big Island, we rented a car at Hilo. You will tender in at Kona, and there is a nice little beach right next to the tender dock where we spent the day. There is a coffee shop a few steps away with sandwiches for lunch and free internet. There is also an ABC store right there with fountain sodas. On Kauai, we rented a car the first day. The ship leaves at 1:30 the second day, so we walked the short distance over to enjoy the beautiful beach at the Marriott. It was a nice mix of touring and beaches.
