lynaberdeen Posted June 3, 2013 #1 Share Posted June 3, 2013 Does anyone have any recommendations for port house visits / river cruises in Oporto. We are taking the Wine Immersive cruise in September however all of the Celebrity Oporto excursions that we would like to do are only open to over 18's - frustrating when they give you an infant price but then don't let you book. I could understand if we were taking a teenager but a 4 year old!!! We did the HOHO bus last year so looking to do something different with the limited time we have in port? Any suggestions? Rare ladylemondrop Posted June 3, 2013 #2 Share Posted June 3, 2013 Hi lynn, when we were there with our kids, we went to the historic river district, and walked along the very quaint river front, there were lots of small delicatessen style shops, selling local food and port, (with lots of tasting!) and souvenir shops, then we crossed the bridge, and walked along the other side of the river, you can take a river cruise easily here, no need to prebook. There was also a cathedral very close to this area, that we explored too, all pretty easy to do by yourself, and you can pace yourselves with your little one too. Its a nice place to have a lunch overlooking the river.
We're The Groupnors Posted June 3, 2013 #3 Share Posted June 3, 2013 Once you are in Villa Nova de Gaia (where the port lodges are, across the river from Oporto proper) you can just walk up and down the hill from one port lodge to another. We saw lots of little kids accompanying their parents (not drinking, of course), but they did seem to get bored. You might want to try one or two port lodges interspersed with other activities. I would highly recommend Taylors, as they have a lovely lunch spot on their lawn overlooking the river, with lots of peacocks, chickens and chicks in the garne (at least this time of year) to entertain the kids.
