tubing...fun or kind of tame?

we're looking into a stop in Dominica on a cruise 6/07 and sniffing out things to do. river tubing looks like a possibility, but considering they allow kids over 6 to go along, is it tame or fun? and, this may seem silly, but does/did it bother anyone else to have their bum hanging in the water, when god knows what lives in the water? :o not that i'm afraid of pirahnas taking a chunk out of my rear, but as far as parasites, etc. call me paranoid, but the thought kind of freaks me out.

our other ports we have some tours and such tentatively lined up, but we wanted something a little different than being stuck in a van all day long.

River Tubing Ride

A 40-minute drive will take you through the unspoiled Layou Valley and on to your launching site. A tubing guide will be waiting to take you on a breathtaking journey down the Layou River. There will be a short safety briefing before you begin your tubing adventure.

On your way to the river, you will see one of the two airports. You will also pass the village of Massacre, named after the massacre of the Carib Indians in 1674. As you continue along, you will pass the village of Mahaut and the Dominica Coconut Product Factory in Belfast where cosmetics, detergent, and soaps are manufactured by utilizing local raw materials such as coconuts, cocoa, and hibiscus leaves.

The Layou Gorge, with its precipitous, tall cliffs that overhang the river and its unspoiled, natural vegetation with several large, cool freshwater pools, is the perfect setting for launching your tubing adventure. Enjoy the cool mountain breeze sweeping down the valley and gently rustling through the branches of the dominant trees in the area. The breathtaking view of the vertical cliffs is captivating. Surely, it does not get any better than this in the Caribbean for the outdoor adventure enthusiast.

Wear your swimsuit under a coverup; bring water shoes, sunscreen, and a towel from the ship.

This will be great to do if you do not want to be in a van all day. The rivers are very safe as far as anyone can tell.

Have you done this before? How does one keep personal articles (cover up, towel) dry while floating down the river?

Yes... Keeping your towels, cover up and any other items dry is no problem, as all of these things are left on the van. The driver of the van is responsible for taking care of these things while you float down the river with a guide.

If you want more information about the river tubing, you can contact one of the local tour operators in Dominica. He will answer of all your questions, and deal with all of your fears and and other concerns. He is also very good at what he does.... his email: *****.

We went with him when we went on our river tubig excursion.:)

We did the river tubing in Dominica in February. It was a lot of fun. I'd expected it to be a relaxing float down the river, but about half was rapids. They were mild but fun. The tube has a bottom so your bottom isn't hanging out in the water. We wore Tevas on our feet but a lot of people were barefoot. We left everything else on the bus except for a disposable waterproof camera. There were about 10 young men working the tour and they knew the places in the river where the tubes could become stuck and were there to help people. It was one of our most fun tours and we plan to do it again next year.

We toob (as we call it) on the guadelupe river here in Texas. its a blast. I was thinking about doing this excursion when we cruise in October. But I notice life vests in the pictures. Are they required? Also, during the float, do they serve beverages. Here we get a cooler and float and sip.
