barante Posted July 10, 2013 #26 Share Posted July 10, 2013 rti -- When you examine itineraries, you need to take one factor into consideration: The distance from the port to the nearest city. I'm saying this because unless you know what you are getting into you may be disappointed. I'm saying this because the bigger these ships get, the farther away they may park from city centers. So forget strolling from the port to the center -- which is possible in Rio, Lisbon, Hamburg and in many Baltic ports. In Saigon, the city is 45 minutes away; ditto for Kuala Lumpur. We have sailed the Atlantic coast of South America twice. We have also repeatedly considered a cruise along the Pacific Coast of South America. The Atlantic coast is attractive because of the proximity of ports to cities. This is true in Buenos Aires, Rio, Salvador do Bahia, Recife. However, we were disappointed on our HAL Veendam cruise to the Amazon. Long distances to river towns of little touristic interest. Manaus, though, was worth seeing. dorisis Posted July 10, 2013 #27 Share Posted July 10, 2013 South America in January. Weather would be warmer than where you live. But it can still be cold especially the further south you go.
snowskier Posted July 10, 2013 #28 Share Posted July 10, 2013 Antartica. Leave from Ushia, Argentina. Head south through the Drake Passage and spend a week with the icebergs, glaciers and penguins. Escape the touristy ports and shops and enjoy the beauty and serenity of your surroundings.

We have cruised east, west, and south Caribbean, Grand Europe, Asia and toured South Africa. Any ideas on where we should go that is different and a must cruise? Greatly appreciate any ideas! We have been looking at South America but not sure what to think? :):):) Thank you!
