Casino cash or credit card?

When in the casino, do you have to use cash or do you simply charge it against your onboard account? It makes a difference with how much cash I have on hand.

We will be on the Dawn, if it makes any difference.

You can do either. Assuming adequate credit on the credit card used to secure your onboard account, you can download up to 2000 a day in the casino from your room key card. Or you can use cash. If you actually take cash from the casino cage against your account, they charge 3percent. But if you download to a slot machine, they do not.

Wait, I'm sorry I gave you bad info. I do not think the dawn has switched over yet to slot machines that you can download directly from key card. On all ships you can get 2000 a day from casino cage against your card, but they charge 3percent.

How do you download money to a slot machine? Do you insert your on board account card or a credit card into the slot machine?

Does the money stay on your casino card, so you can leave the machine and go to another machine or do you have to take all the money out of the machine before moving to another one? Or worse, do you have to gamble all the money you put on the machine without being able to leave if the machine turns out to be a dud??

If you can tell me how to do this, I would not need to carry nearly as much cash as I had to on our last cruise, because I refuse to pay the 3% fee, but we spend a good amount of time in the casino.

Thank you very much for sharing this information.

On breakaway, you get a pin number from casino cashier at beginning of cruise - it takes like 2 minutes. Then, when you want toplay, you insert either your room key or your casino card into slot, and it asks you whether you want to deposit or withdraw, you press withdraw, it asks you how much, you put in the amount, and a few seconds later that amount is on your card. Then It asks how much you want to load onto machine. If you download 100 Onto machine, and then decide machine sucks, all you have to do is pull your card out, and whatever is in the machine goes back on your card. I was told this system will eventually be on all ncl ships, but right now just on breakaway. If you win you can upload money directly to your onboard acct as well

So, essentially, I will have to use cash to play. It sounds like I can access cash from my key card, but it will incur a 3% fee. Is that correct?

If that is the case, I will bring extra cash.

Do you have to do it this way or can you also use cash ? Carnival has this system in place and, while it's convenient if you don't want to carry extra cash for the casino, I found it hard to keep track of what I was spending.

On the Dawn, yes, you have to use cash (for the time being). And yes, if you want to access cash from your onboard account, you can go to the cashier and take out cash against it and (unless you are CAS level "Golden" or higher) they will charge you a 3% fee for doing so.

On the Breakaway, you can either directly download from your account or use cash in any machine. All other ships are (for the time being) cash only at machines.

I also refuse to pay a 3 percent charge. I'm already giving them enough of my money in the machines.

The issue is that NCL pays a fee (my company's rate is between 2.3% and 3.1%, I don't know NCL's rate) to the credit card processer, so they are recouping what they are losing.

Years ago they had no fee and people took advantage by taking money out at the casino, not gambling with it and paying off their credit card when they got home. They were racking up points on their credit cards without actually making a purchase. Bad apples spoiling it for the rest of us :(

On European cruises and Transatlantics they usually don't charge the fees, as there are many people not carrying USD, and they want them to gamble.

So if I understand correctly' date=' downloading to machines will still incur the 3% fee unless I am golden level or higher?[/quote']

I see you're going on Breakaway, so there is no fee for doing this for the slots. For tables and all other ships' slots, the 3% is charged, unless you are Golden or VIP.

Interesting. Not only less hassle than getting cash from casino cage, but also no fees. Good to know. Thanks for the clarification. We always are CAS guests and previously fee was waived as long as we took out a minimum $1000 each time. I'm only hot level so was planning on bringing sufficient cash for Breakaway cruise. With the machine loading option, that won't be necessary. Gotta love CC for all the latest info from helpful members like you!:)

Save some money. You can buy slot coupons and table coupons from NCL.On NCL you pay less for a bigger amount. you buy it on the computer and the coupons are waiting for you in the cabin when you sail .You can do it for each person. You can also do the same at slot coupon.com. Just make sure to buy the coupon for the ship you are sailing on.again one coupon for each person and pay $25 for a $50 coupon.that coupon you print out.

I have also read on the CAS portion of NCL's website that you can pre buy $20 worth of slot credit for $10 if you call them prior to boarding.

Does anyone know if you can use this AND the slotplaycoupons promotion together?

Apparently someone else had this exact question and began another thread.

Yes, you can combine them.

The 3% does suck. They could just not allow it. But, I doubt there are any casinos anywhere in the country that will give you cash for 3%. Instead they force you to do a cash advance, with fees, and very high interest rates.

Take enough cash, and you are covered.

Or use the ATM - even with a $5-$7 fee on $1,000 - it is not bad.

(by the way, if you spend enough, they will waive the fee)

If you are talking about withdrawing a decent amount of money for the casino, there is always the option to set up a credit line which will allow a fee free withdrawal. http://www.ncl.com/freestyle-cruise/casinos-at-sea/cash-credit-access

That's good to know. I never set up the credit line before because withdrawing cash from the cage was never a problem until the new CAS tier benefits went into effect. If I can withdraw on a LOC without paying a percentage, I will definitely set that up. Thanks for the tip.
