Singer4Him Posted August 5, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2013 DH went to Jamaica many years ago and has talked about the jerk chicken that he ate while there ever since. He would like for me to get to try it when we go at the end of the month. Anyone have suggestions as to where the best place is to get it close to port in MoBay? snedecor Posted August 6, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 6, 2013 We went to the Pork Pit at least two times when we were in Jamaica. It's a local joint, and they do not give tourists any special treatment. Just hang back, watch the locals order at the counter and do the same. Food is cooked on an open pit, either pork or chicken, you can get beans, rice, maybe slaw and corn, along with fried bread and extra sauce (it's spicy). It's not a 5-star restaurant, just a local place to get jerk pork and chicken. Don't expect organic, low-fat, haut-cuisine, beautiful plating (or ANY plating)... Take change (typical Jamaican ruse to get more $ is to claim they're out of change) and be aware that you WILL be recognized as a tourist and will probably be approached to buy trinkets, CD's, and weed. Singer4Him Posted August 6, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted August 6, 2013 Is it within walking distance of the port or will we need to go by taxi?
novicetraveller Posted August 7, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 7, 2013 Is it within walking distance of the port or will we need to go by taxi? I can't answer that. Are you looking to do some sightseeing as well? If so, you may want to hire a private taxi (look for the red number plate as these are authorised to carry tourists) and visit a few places in the area. I can recommend Liberty Tours Jamaica and Lindsay McFarlane if you want to experience something in Jamaica. Themlast time I was in Jamaica, I went to the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary and Richmond Hill to name a couple of places.
nwo4life Posted August 8, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 8, 2013 Is it within walking distance of the port or will we need to go by taxi? We loved the Pork Pit. Its on the Hip Strip, I would recommend a taxi. Margaritaville and shopping is close by.

I am taking a ship's excursion from Falmouth solo. I have 2 hours of free time. Is it safe to walk the hip strip to the Pork Pit? I want to do some shopping also. Thanks.
