lisasay123 Posted August 7, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 7, 2013 Hello All. Cruising next week on FOS. Very excited. Cell phone questions: What is the difference between airplane mode and turning data roaming off? Do I need to do both? What happens if on an island we get to a place with free wi-fi and we turn those things back on? We'll receive all the data that's been waiting for us. Is there a problem with that? Thanks! Lisa A lot depends on your specific phone however we also use Verizon. Can never be too safe. Have heard the nightmares of $1,000 phone bills upon a cruiser's return. Keep data roaming off the entire time from the moment you get ready to board to the time you return from the cruise. On most phones, airplane mode will not over ride wifi. If you get to an island and can find free wifi then you can turn on just wifi and surf via that system. Not sure what you mean by "data waiting for us". Only things that usually wait for the status of your phone may be text messages or notifications which will come through any time you take your phone off of airplane mode regardless of your internet connection. Just be careful if you need your phone for any incoming calls, especially emergency calls from home. Airplane mode usually disables the phone also. Basically, as long as you have ALL data turned off, you are pretty safe from huge charges. Verizon does offer an international data plan however it is a very small amount of data. If I remember correctly it was like 100mb for $25. Could eat that up visiting a site that downloads pictures or media. If you use messaging, it is 5 cents for incoming and 50 cents for outgoing. The cost of phone calls depends on the port you are in but can range from $0.65 to almost $3.00 per minute.
mandaleigh Posted August 8, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 8, 2013 Turn your airplane mode on. It will automatically turn your wifi off. Go and manually turn on your wifi. You will not accrue any charges and if you get somewhere with free wifi it will ask you to join network. Eastern or western? St Thomas- pizza amore just across from the havensight gates has free wifi for customers. It is the best pizza in the world too! Grand cayman eateries downtown also had free wifi for customers.
