Emperor Norton Posted August 14, 2013 Author #78 Share Posted August 14, 2013 Aghios Nikolaos (Crete) Another hurry up and wait, er tender port. I took the tender into town, played frogger with the traffic and found a place that seemed like a Greek version of Tiburon, California. Welcome to our charming town Isn't it just so scenic? Emperor Norton Posted August 14, 2013 Author #79 Share Posted August 14, 2013 Aghios Nikolaos (Crete) Let me mention Waves Grill. They have a relatively small lunchtime menu. One of the items on the menu is the Q-ban sandwich. I'm not sure why they replaced the traditional dill pickle spear with cornichons as the texture and taste aren't near the same. I was also confused as to why it came on French roll rather than the Cuban mentioned on the menu. I was further perplexed as to why the whole sandwich had failed to be put through a panini press. The sandwich wasn't quite what I was expecting, nor was it even as advertised. Strike two (previous strike has been their inability to cook a burger to order - no matter what you ask for you get something different). There's a hot dog on the menu called the All-American dog. This complex bit of culinary work is listed as: hot dog, bun, mustard, ketchup, relish, and onions. I asked for it sans ketchup ( ) and was told that would be no problem as they don't put ketchup or mustard on the dogs, even though they're listed on the menu - because those condiments are available on the tables. Great. So since butter is available do I need to make my own Hollandaise? Perhaps mount my own sauces with butter? I try again, this time ordering the dog without mustard or ketchup. I get a hot dog on the bun. No relish, no onions. Hrm. I kick it back and they look at me like "what are we supposed to do". Odd. I point out its missing half the requested ingredients. The dump about a teaspoon of relish on the plate and turn away. Still missing the onions. I request the onions - instead of the diced or chopped onions you usually get on a hot dog they give me the rings you'd serve with a burger /facepalm. Ok. So you won't make whats listed on your menu, then argue with the customer that because some people don't want more than a plain hot dog you're only willing to make a plain hot dog (unless you order Mexican, that somehow they can do). Best customer service ever. Mention this malaise to management and they don't care (it became another game - see if you could get something from waves exactly as ordered and listed on the menu - never happened). Oddly this menu featured prominently in Trivia, perhaps the CD should be teaching the Grill staff whats on their menu.:p Perhaps they can lure some staff away from McDonalds. The cruise direction Leslie John running even Brain Teasers Full Gallery:
Emperor Norton Posted August 14, 2013 Author #80 Share Posted August 14, 2013 Rhodes, Greece Welcome to Rhodes We were thaaat close to the old town These two deer mark where the feet of the colossus once stood. Rumor has it if you take the antlers from the local deer and burn them you'll drive away snakes We leave downtown and head for the hills so I can watch planes take off and land. Our food was great and if we didn't like something then it was gladly replaced by staff with a smile on their face. Perhaps because we were not so snarky. A shame you didn't find alot to enjoy on your trip. Please find another cruise line that would support your unobtainable expectations. A private cruise perhaps. My experience was unimpressive. You may have convinced me to try it again, if only for the food.
The wine was definitely several steps up from their by the bottle offerings. Nothing made me go wow wine wise from the Connoisseurs menu and one on the discovery menu I found not at all to my liking(that will come later). It was interesting to note that one of the wines was from 27 Fathoms which is a Silver Trident label. Silver Trident being owned by one of PCH/Oceanias execs. I think the problem they have is the wines are picked off Wine Spectator ratings. If you find you agree with their ratings and don't mind they tend to ignore smaller labels you're good, otherwise not so much. But I don't want to turn this into a debate about Wine Spectator rankings ;)

Emperor Norton Posted August 15, 2013 Author #96 Share Posted August 15, 2013 Ephesus, Turkey Today I would do something different. I joined a ships tour. This tour had a difficulty rating of 3 (or 4?) out of 4. The tour was discover Ephesus with an Expert and was limited to 16 people. This was by far the best ships tour I would take over the two segments. The expert actually wrote the book on the Terrace houses and seemed to know his field with none of the stammering, "uhs" "ahs" or "I don't knows" that other "Experts" have been known to frequently utter. One of the other benefits of having an expert is the experts know where all the shady spots are:D Welcome to Ephesus It was interesting to see how columns were joined A lonely archway overlooking what was once the harbor ' It wasn't quite the yellow brick road (one of our two experts is on the right)
