GlenHill House Posted August 15, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2013 We're thinking of doing the bike tour.......has anyone done this with Thomson? Was it any good? I'd like a tour where we can see the majority of sights but that we get some free time too!! Which one would you recommend? Thanks!!

happy v Posted August 17, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 17, 2013 I haven't done the bike tour, but I've been to Rome and would never try to cycle on their roads! The best excursion to see only the things you want and have free time would be Rome on your own. You are given a map, but I would advise you to decide where you want to go first and do a bit of research about how to get there. It is possible to walk to all of the main sites or depending on how much you want to see there is a very good ho-ho service.
joeholiday2 Posted August 18, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 18, 2013 We did the Rome on your own and enjoyed it, a lot of walking to see the sights but if you are good with a map it's a good way of getting a full day there without the worry of missing the train back. My friend did the bike tour a couple of years ago, he is a confident rider and loved it, his Wife however.... The traffic was mad....
k8ti Posted August 18, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 18, 2013 We did Rome on are own. Got the train and made our own way. We did feel that our lack of knowledge prevented us getting the best out of the day. Although it was much cheaper. We used the hop on hop off bus. It really depends on what you want to get out of the day. This time due to six of us traveling we have booked a private tour. The cost between the group compared with the Thomson tour. thesignalman Posted September 5, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 5, 2013 If the funds will run to it, take the private train. Superb day out and you see everything you need to see!
Queenmandy Posted September 5, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 5, 2013 I agree the Rome express was a fantastic day and far from exhausting which many tour are ! Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
Auntiebones Posted September 5, 2013 #8 Share Posted September 5, 2013 unlike us, we paid for the most expensive trip and it was worth every penny. We had never been before so didn't lose any time getting lost. The only time to buy anything is in the Vatican shop or by the Trevi fountain. Having a meal included meant no time wasted looking for somewhere to eat. We bumped into the bike tour. One lady was petrified. Not for the faint hearted. Nannyannie Posted June 26, 2016 #10 Share Posted June 26, 2016 We also did the express with Thomsons which was pricey but worth every penny. You did need to be reasonably fit as it did involve a lot of walking. We saw so much and was well organised.
