Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve

I am thinking of going to see this place when visiting Belize in January. Can anyone tell me a little about it, like is it worth the trip? Carnival does not have an excursion that includes this stop so I need to find out about taxis and how much it would be to get there. Is it safe in Belize? I was there about 5 years ago and there were soldiers on every street corner in the city and out in the country.

I had actually thought this would be a great place as well, but then i saw something saying a flight from Belize City was about $190??

 

That alone would keep us away...way too much $ for us, and then I read:

No, not jaguars. They are there of course, but the chances of seeing one is about seventeen thousand to one. Having said that, people do occasionally catch glimpses of these stealthy carnivores, but much more likely, especially in the rainy season, is finding the pug marks along the muddier stretches of the trails. Jaguars are in fact found in all of Belize's reserves. The terrain is dense tropical rainforest with well maintained trails, jungle canopy to 120'. Wildlife to see includes jaguar, jaguarundi, peccary, howler monkey, gibnut, agouti, snakes, coatamundi, over 300 bird species.
