LittleJeanne Posted September 27, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 27, 2013 I thought I would post a few pictures of the decorated doors around the ship from our last cruise. I got more involved with the roll call here on Cruise Critic for this cruise and met some great people. Our group was slow to start, but ended up getting a lot more involved in the roll call during the last month. I had never even participated in a door decorating contest and decided to sponsor one for our group. I had a small trophy, some candy and a ribbon for each winner. I definitely learned by doing and would alter a few things if I were to sponsor an event again. As the judges were roaming the ship judging I took pics of all the doors that I found decorated and thought I'd share them all here since the question of what to decorate with or how to decorate often comes up on the boards. LittleJeanne Posted September 27, 2013 Author #2 Share Posted September 27, 2013 This 1st door was not one of ours. But for those who argue that door decorating is tacky ... I thought this one was very tastefully done. This one wasn't one of ours either but I was impressed with the 3rd effect. This was one from our group. Another simple décor that didn't belong to our group. There were actually 2 doors decorated almost identical to this. So I won't post the other. I figured that they must have been traveling together. LittleJeanne Posted September 27, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted September 27, 2013 I assumed that the people in this cabin must spend a great deal of their cruise time in the Casino. One of the rules for our contest was that it had to say Cruise Critic somewhere on the door. I didn't want to decide that someone was the winner and have it not even be one of our doors. This door made it very clear what roll call they belonged to. This one belonged to one of our group. I was jealous of their palm tree I'd had an image that I wanted to create for our door and went looking for a palm tree and didn't find one. Then I wasn't feeling creative enough to make one. I liked both of their large pieces on their door. Can you guess that this was a cruise from New Orleans? Another casino cruiser I assume

flounder315 Posted September 27, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 27, 2013 I love decorating the door, it makes finding you door so much easier after a night of pub crawling, cabin crawling, or bar hopping... I had that flamingo but I put him on the Balcony. I will go back to the dollar store to see if they have any more. We have 5 cabins booked for next August... LittleJeanne Posted September 27, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted September 27, 2013 I thought I was all ready to start this thread. Somehow photobucket has got hung up with uploading the rest of my pic and I'll have to wait. My door was a pirate themed door. I think I'll be resurrecting as many of those decorations as I can for our Sunshine cruise with the 2 grandsons next year.
plattwear Posted September 28, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 28, 2013 (edited) I did not enter the contest... but here is my door. I was on the Conquest 9-1-13 as well (and in the roll-call). Someone stole the flipflop decoration so I replaced it with the tiki-hut. Jeanne, I would love to see your pirate themed door. I hope you have a wonderful time next year on your cruise. I am taking my mom on a cruise to Alaska hopefully in May of next year. Edited September 28, 2013 by plattwear
LittleJeanne Posted September 28, 2013 Author #8 Share Posted September 28, 2013 (edited) Plastic tablecloths made a nice backdrop for some doors. This was the door with the working porthole in the open position. Another door with fun tropical cut outs. LittleJeanne Posted September 28, 2013 Author #9 Share Posted September 28, 2013 We walked by this door often and hubby called it the fun in the sun door. I was selected by the judges as one of the winners in our contest. Another Mardi Gras themed door And the best overall door. They not only decorated their door, but some of the surrounding walls and it was in 3rd. They cut plastic glasses in half to mount to their "tiki bar". Note the palm tree mounted on the walls and tropical stuffed animals hanging around.
LittleJeanne Posted September 28, 2013 Author #10 Share Posted September 28, 2013 Another with lots of fun cut outs to look at. There were lots of razor ask fans onboard and I saw several doors with just a single one of these decorations on it. But this one went to a bit more trouble to show their team spirit. I thought I had a better pic that was straight on of just my door, but can't find it. We were taking pics during the week on 3-4 different devices. My hubby took this one and insisted I was in it "for scale" as if I don't know how big a door is or I am. :)
plattwear Posted September 28, 2013 #11 Share Posted September 28, 2013 Jeanne, you found my door too. :-) Thank you for posting the photo. Your photo was way better than mine so I saved it. It is the one above the one your husband called the "fun in the sun door". I took photos with different devices as well and the one of my door was with my iphone so it did not turn out as well as the one you took. I am sorry I did not get to meet you. :D
LittleJeanne Posted September 28, 2013 Author #12 Share Posted September 28, 2013 Jeanne, you found my door too. :-) Thank you for posting the photo. Your photo was way better than mine so I saved it. It is the one above the one your husband called the "fun in the sun door". I took photos with different devices as well and the one of my door was with my iphone so it did not turn out as wellas the one you took. I am sorry I did not get to meet you. :D I'm sorry we didn't meet up too. It was fun wandering the halls looking at all the doors. As for devices, I have learned that my cell phone can take decent pics if you take your time. It seems to take it a bit to find what it needs to focus on and focus. If you just grab it and snap the pics tend to be a bit fuzzy. But if you give it a minute to focus it does a lot better. Hubby's phone tends to take pic in low light situations better than mine though. I wanted to get all these posted because it seems like every month or so someone asks about door decorations. Now I can just link back to this thread as examples. We didn't have a great turnout for our award time for the doors. I'm not quite sure how I'd do it different though. I'm already trying to figure out what I'll do to my door for my Halloween cruise.
BiscayneBay460 Posted September 30, 2013 #13 Share Posted September 30, 2013 Do you just use tape? Or poster adhesive? First cruise in two weeks and we are decorating Halloween.
LittleJeanne Posted September 30, 2013 Author #14 Share Posted September 30, 2013 Do you just use tape? Or poster adhesive? First cruise in two weeks and we are decorating Halloween. I took a little bit of everything. But just used scotch tape. You can't tell it from my pic but I even had gold coins scattered around and at the center of my pirate map by the x. I really figured somebody would steal my gold coins, but they weren't touched. The door with the tiki bar had used quite a bit of clear packing tape. On the door with the porthole window they had used a super strong magnet to hold the porthole to the door. Somebody else had used a few magnets with metal clips attached. I have used poster putty a few times in the past.
aprilivy Posted September 30, 2013 #15 Share Posted September 30, 2013 I have used "window clings" of Tiki huts, whales, etc as a door decoration. I actually decorate my office door at work telling them where we'll be and when I'll be back and how to look at the webcam to see what I'm up to. crusinpsychRN Posted September 30, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 30, 2013 Thanks for all those pics! I've never seen much door decorating on cruises. I usually have the CC sign. Compared to these pics, mine is rather dull! Have to get something for Halloween!
Honeybe Posted October 1, 2013 #18 Share Posted October 1, 2013 Do you just use tape? Or poster adhesive? First cruise in two weeks and we are decorating Halloween. The doors on Princess are metal, so I always use magnets. You can get adhesive magnets to add to the back of any decoration and they work great. See you soon. Imachillin Posted October 2, 2013 #19 Share Posted October 2, 2013 Hi all, I've never decorated my cruise door before, but I bought a couple refrigerator magnets for that purpose for our upcoming cruise. Now I'm wondering if they will stick to the door. Thanks.

Mysticks1 Posted October 3, 2013 #22 Share Posted October 3, 2013 One question. Why? Another question - Why not? Some people enjoy doing it. Some do it to make it easier to find their doors on those long hallways. I did it when my daughter was younger to make it easier for her to find although mine was much simpler that some of those. Some people decorate the inside of their cabins as well. I enjoy seeing the doors decorated and I think the stewards enjoy seeing them as well. On our Halloween cruise I put some of those cling type decorations on the door, one was of a monster behind bars so it looked like it was part of the door. Our steward brought several other stewards by to see it.
