Best way to get around Mykonos and Santorini

Recommended Posts

We had such a fun day going around the island in Santorini and Mykonos. And it was really cheap! Transportation of choice: the ATV!

Mykonos: rented a scooter from Joe's Bikes - right by the South Bus Station in Hora. Cost was only 10 Euros! He didn't take our credit card, simply handed over driver's license and signed the rental agreeement form. Very simple. We returned the bike, and didn't even have to fill up with gas! Although, later on we saw people on the ATVs - and we instantly wished we rented those instead. We didn't realize they had those. It definitely is easier and safer to go around in an ATV.

Santorini: rented an ATV from Kostas. This is right by the main street in Fira. You'll see a sign and it's beside or behind Santo's car rental. Cost was 20 Euros. This time he took an imprint of our credit card - which my husband signed. It made me nervous because there was no amount, it was left blank. (We paid in cash). But it was okay -- when we returned the ATV, we got the credit card receipt and ripped in to shreds. We did have to fill up on gas, just so we didn't run out. It cost us 5 Euros to fill it up. We went to a lot more places in Santorini than Mykonos. You can't get lost in Santorini, there are signs on the road telling you where Red Beach, Oia (or Ia), Kamari, Fira, Akotiri, Perissa, etc. is. Parking was never a problem.

We loved the ATV - and you'll see tons of people going around the island on these. The scooter made us a bit nervous because of the balancing and it does pose more danger in terms of skidding. The ATV is a rugged vehicle with four big wheels, and very very easy to drive. We always wore helmets - which does help shield your head from the hot sun. (Hats tend to get blown off by the wind). Maximum speed on the ATV was around 40 km/hr. Not too bad, and if you are slow, cars will just go around you. Not a big deal. Don't be put off by their honking - they just want to tell you to watch out as they are going around you. The islands are relatively small and does not face heavy traffic like the cities.

You don't need an international driver's license for the ATV. And it can only accomodate 2 people. Don't worry about renting in advance, they have a LOT! And there are so many rental agencies around town. Just don't pay too much for it. (ie. we paid 20 Euros)

I really recommend the ATV over a car (unless it's a convertible). It's great to explore the island with the wind in your face :-)

Even if you've never used an ATV before, it is so simple to use and learn on the spot.
