Really Dumb Question - Is pier on the river in New Orleans?

Looking at the Jewel out of NOLA. When I google the cruise pier so I can choose a hotel - it looks the the pier is on the River. I'm used to cruising from Florida - right on the ocean. Do the ships in New Orleans navigate the river for a distance before reaching the ocean?

Yes, the pier is on the river and it will take aproximately 8 hours before you reach the gulf. It's very nice.

Wow - we've been on 35+ cruises, but never out of New Orleans. That sounds very unique - strongly considering NOLA instead of Miami again.

We stayed at the Hilton Riverside Hotel and actually walked to the pier. Took us about 10 minutes. Mine you we only had one suitcase each so it was easy to do.
