There are a few different ways to accomplish this DIY.

 

Easiest would be a taxi. They are right in front of the cruise port and there is a fixed fare of 90 Euro (round trip with a two hour stop at the volcano - two hours is more than enough time).

 

You can take the bus but there are only two runs in the morning so you don't have a great deal of flexibility with this method. Bus fare is Euro 2,90 each way.

 

You can take the Circumvesuviana local train to Ercolano Scavi, and from the piazza in front of the station you can get a shared van tour that will drive you up and bring you back. I did this several years ago for 20 Euro, I would expect it to be about 25 Euro now.
