jblbcl Posted October 14, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 14, 2013 Hello, I use a manual wheelchair. I need transportation from a downtown hotel to Port Everglades. The last time we were in Fort Lauderdale, we booked a handicap cab a day ahead of time. The cab arrived 2 hours late after many phone calls assuring us they were on the way. The hotel told us this was typical for the Fort Lauderdale cab company. Do you have any suggestions for a reliable company to use? Thanks for your help. ZellaLamb Posted October 21, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 21, 2013 The cabs at the airport include wheelchair access ones. Of course, you can't guarantee that you will get one but they are there. We arrived one night and there was one guy in front of us in the line. A wheelchair van came up and he took it. We asked him to wait for the next taxi and he said "no, I was here first.". The next one came along in 15 minutes.

Fort Lauderdale / Port Everglades is an extremely busy port and also a popular port for those traveling with a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Additionally there are generally several ships in port at the same time. As a result this places a high demand for Accessible Taxis which there is a limited supply. Unless you can find a private accessible transport company, which will most likely cost considerable more than a taxi than suggest the following. Reserve with one or more taxi companies and take the one that shows up first. or Book the cab for an earlier time so that if it does show up 2 hours late as the last time that you are in actuality still on time. For example if you want to be at the port by 11:00 AM than book for 9:00 AM - 9:30 AM. However this method would require you to be ready at 9:00 AM in the event it actually shows up on time. Lsimon Posted October 25, 2013 #4 Share Posted October 25, 2013 Does anyone know of a limo or shuttle company that has wheelchair accessible vans? This does not relate to a cruise, but I'm accompanying my brother back to Florida next week. He became disabled last summer and has been in Colorado since then. He can transfer into a regular car but it is much easier if he uses a wheelchair van. He uses a fixed frame manual chair. He knows there are wheelchair accessible cabs but is worried about the cost of a cab as it is metered and not fixed rate and he thinks the cab fare back up to Boca Raton (about 30 miles from FLL) will be very expensive. Before becoming disabled he would take a hired car for around $60. This will be a challenging trip for him as it will be a long day and the first time flying since he became disabled as well. Splinter Posted October 26, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 26, 2013 SuperShuttle serves Ft. Lauderdale, and they have wheelchair accessible shuttles. I would check with them. We have had good service from them at other ports/airports.

jblbcl Posted October 27, 2013 Author #7 Share Posted October 27, 2013 Cato, Thanks for the web site. There are many possibilities. Do you, or anyone else, have any experience with any of the companies listed? Good or bad? Thanks, Betty
Mouse's Shadow Posted October 27, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 27, 2013 I've only had to do this once. My son is a wheelchair user and we called Yellow Cab about an hour before we needed them and had no trouble. But we have another cruise booked and so I'm interested in any responses you might get. kitty9 Posted October 27, 2013 #9 Share Posted October 27, 2013 We've stayed at both the Hilton and Sheraton hotels near the cruise port and went outside to the parking valet and he called for an accessible taxi. Three times the taxi arrived in less than 10 minutes. The other time, the vehicle was there in 5 minutes.
englishgal Posted October 29, 2013 #10 Share Posted October 29, 2013 we are having a transfer with the cruise line (Celebrity). They are putting us up in the Hilton in Fort Lauderdale. All part of the cruise package. You could always ask your cruise line which taxi firm that they use, I am sure that they would help you

The only transfer we've seen with Celebrity is a large bus that's not accessible.
Wheeling TravelingMom Posted November 17, 2013 #12 Share Posted November 17, 2013 We used Yellowcab as well in FLL last March and had no problems. I did call and make the reservation and followed up with the day before.
CRUISEWITHH Posted August 14, 2014 #13 Share Posted August 14, 2014 We will be getting off the ship in Fort Lauderdale and want to know if there is someone who helps travelers get a taxi or if we will have to call when we disembark and WAIT for an accessible one to come? Do they usually have a few accessible waiting at the port? Helen
cruisead Posted August 15, 2014 #14 Share Posted August 15, 2014 When you leave the cruise terminal, go directly to the taxi area, across the roadway from the terminal. There will be several taxi "callers" that will summon the accessible van taxis. We've not had to wait more than 5 minutes. Sometimes the local sheriffs who work the terminal have called the van for us.

CRUISEWITHH Posted September 14, 2014 #16 Share Posted September 14, 2014 Thanks to all who responded. Just want everyone to know that this was the easiest disembarkment that we have had in a long time. After we got our bags we simply walked out to the taxi area and there were a long line of taxi-vans that were able to transport us scooter and all to the airport. Driver was very patient and helpful.
