Cruise Cash/Cheers

I'm wondering if anyone has ever purchased 'cruise cash' in advance and has used it as payment towards their 'Cheers' beverage program once on board.

We have 'Visa gift cards' that my husband has earned from work which are redeemable with Carnival, but only for purchases made before boarding. We are trying to utilize what we can to pay for stuff up front to decrease our expenses on board.

Thanks in advance!

This is from FAQ regarding cruise cash. It sounds like plane cruise cash can be used for anything, whereas cruise cash bar is just for bar purchases. I assume either can be used toward Cheers.

http://www.carnival.com/core/faq.aspx?icid=CC_Footer_88#q-1357045

What can Cruise Cash be used for?

– Cruise Cash - $25, $50, $75, and $100 – Can be used on any expenses on the guests’ Sail and Sign account. This includes staff gratuities and taxes.

– Cruise Cash Bar - $25, $50, $75, and $100 – Can be used on all bar purchases (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). This includes but is not limited to: cocktails, soda, juice, water, wine/champagne/bottles of liquor purchased in the dining room or through room service, any purchase within the coffee shop, souvenir cups or glasses sold at the bars. Beverages sold within the gift shops are not covered by this credit.

– Cruise Cash Photo - $10 – Can be used on all photo purchases. This includes but is not limited to: photographs, batteries, cameras, frames, albums all purchased from the photo department. Photo related items sold within the gift shops are not covered by this credit.

EDIT TO ADD THIS SPECIFIC TO CHEERS.

Can I use my Cruise Cash Bar credit on Bottomless Bubbles, wine packages or the CHEERS program?

Cruise Cash products are onboard credits so anything purchased onboard can potentially be offset by a Cruise Cash product. This is important to note you can purchase Bottomless Bubbles and wine packages pre-cruise, in which case, the Cruise Cash Bar credit will not help offset the cost. However, Bottomless Bubbles, wine packages or the CHEERS program are bar department items, so if they are purchased aboard, you can use your Cruise Cash bar credit toward those items.

Would someone else be able to buy the Cruise Cash for me as a gift somehow? I'm thinking this would make an excellent Christmas gift!:)

Hope so, I'm not big on wanting much on the holidays so this will be perfect if they can!!!

I learned something brand new, and I thank you for posting the CCL-provided info. :)

I was totally unaware that the soda program (and/or wine package) could be purchased pre-cruise by passengers.

But how, exactly, is that accomplished??

Are you sure about that? I asked John Heald and he said that the Cruise Bar Cash Cannot be used for the Cheers program.

I wish I know for sure since it costs less (in points) for the cruise bar cash then for the regular cruise cash

The only down side to the cruise cash is that it is non-refundable OBC, but even that can be worked around in the casino. I bought cruise cash for my last cruise on the Dream, and I had no problems with it, except that it shows up in a different place than refundable onboard credit (from price drops or refund of port charges). Personally, I would never purchase bar or photo cruise cash, as it is too limited in its usage. (Although I did purchase $25 in bar cruise cash for all of my travelling companions on my last cruise, so that they couldn't say no when i asked them to get a drink with me).

for cruise cash for your S&S

http://www.carnivalgiftcards.com/

for gift cards.

I purchase generic cruise cash for my S&S account.

You don't get anything back if you don't use it though- so make sure you don't over purchase.

The gift card can be used just like you do at a retail store.

Carnival gift cards are a better idea than cruise cash, if that's an option with the pre-paid Visa card.

Agreed. Don’t see why OP couldn’t use the visa gift cards to buy the carnival gift cards online. Better than cruise cash IMO. Cruise cash isn’t refundable and you can’t use it on another cruise. If something happens and you have to cancel and rebook, you’re beat for your cruise cash credit.

I actually did just this...I received a few visa gift cards for my birthday and purchased cruise cash with them. I have enough cruise cash to pay for my tips plus a few drinks on board :).

Yes, indeed, they can! My sister purchased some Cruise Cash for me back in July for my birthday. :) She needed my name and booking number, and I had also given her my cabin number and sail date/ ship info just in case. I really hate that you can't see how much Cruise Cash you have on cruise docs like you can with OBC, but, c'est la vie! :p It was so sweet of her to get some as a gift, so I am not complaining. :D YEA!

Sorry . . . Yes, I'm quoting myself :o, but hoping that someone online here will know the answer to the Carnival-posted statment about pre-purchases being available.

Thanks!!

This may be a stupid question, but is there really a difference between the Cruise Cash and Gift Card? I like both of the ideas though!

I think that the Cruise Cash is applied directly to your specific cruise. While the gift cards can be rebated for any cruise.

Gift cards are refundable whereas cruise cash is use or lose and only for that cruise.

Make sure you have enough on your prepaid visa. They charge tax on line that does not show up on line.

We like cruise cash. We buy Cheers. We purchased enough cruise cash to cover the cost of Cheers for an 8 night sailing and our son bought us enough for the Chef's Table for Christmas.

We know that you don't get it back if you don't use it all, but that has never been a problem. Doing it this way the funds are already on our account and we don't have to visit a kiosk or guest services with gift cards to have them applied to the account first.

Everyone has their own thoughts on this. These are mine :)

I was wondering if the Cruise Cash was a better way to go for my onboard SS card vs Cheers package. So if I had $400 in Cruise Cash bought in advance, I can use this for both drinks purchased on board and other purchases including gratuities/tips?

Cruise Cash is a form of non-refundable OBC that can be purchased pre-cruise. It is good only for the sailing and passenger it is purchased for in the FunShops. It is an accepted payment for any purchase or service fee, including the auto-gratuities and drink packages on board, except for the art auctions and the future cruise bookings (as both must be refundable forms of payment in case of buyers remorse or cancellation).

The problem with Cruise Cash for the Cheers program is once you are on board the price of Cheers goes up. If you purchase (up to 48 hours) prior to boarding the price per person is currently $49.95 * number of adults in your cabin * for the number of days the cruise is described as (except for TX and NY where it is charged out at 1 less day due to state law) + 15% auto gratuity, example 7 day cruise 2 adults = $804.20. Purchasing the program on board the cost goes to $54.95 * number of adults in your cabin * for the number of days the cruise is described as (except for TX and NY where it is charged out at 1 less day due to state law) + 15% auto gratuity, example 7 day cruise 2 adults = $884.70. Both couples are getting the same package and the same service but the ones that bought before boarding will save $80.50.

Some people have access to discounted Carnival gift cards through Verizon Wireless, AARP, AllState Insurance, Citi-Rewards and certain grocery stores. These can then be used both prior to boarding and once on board the ship to purchase drink packages, pay for auto-gratuities, reserve excursion tickets, or even just pay the balance due on the cruise.

Thank you for that information. I think having the cruise cash may be better in our case since even though we will have occasional drinks, the additional cruise cash can be used towards additional purchases, rather than just buying drinks or cheers.
