kcwingwalker Posted October 22, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 22, 2013 A contestant on Wheel of Fortune just won a cruise on the Breakaway. She looked very happy! Does anyone know what kind of cabin, etc. a prize like that might include? Better yet have you ever been a lucky winner of a cruise vacation? My DH won a balcony cabin for 2 on a limited list of ships/sail dates from one of NCL's FB contests. We only paid taxes and fees and the cost to upgrade to the same suite we were already booked for the previous week. It was our first B2B last December. :)
New2cruising2011 Posted October 23, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 23, 2013 I won the cruise on the Breakaway from Cruise Critic this year. It included a balcony cabin, airfare for two, gratuities and OBC. I will have to pay the taxes in the spring and I have to pay transport from the airport to the pier. DH and I can't wait for November!
DMH15 Posted October 23, 2013 #6 Share Posted October 23, 2013 Sweepstakes vary drastically. A lot depends on whether a prize is purchased or donated or exchanged. I know people who have won insides and others who won suites. If you notice on wheel they say a value. That might give you an idea. A cruise last week on wheel, not NCL was valued at over $10k. I have won trips with first class air (to Australia) and coach. I will say that anything over $600 ARV you should receive a 1099 for. According to IRS what you can report is ARV. So, if you win a trip, immediately research online and print it out. Must be apples to apples though. For instance, my mom won 2 cars and a diamond watch on wheel and she got to pick the cars and the value varied as you can buy a car less than sticker. Since I won cash and a rodeo drive shopping spree when I was on wheel it was a set dollar. Know I got a little off track, but thought the info might be helpful to anyone who wins a prize like a cruise. LauraBelleMT Posted June 29, 2016 #8 Share Posted June 29, 2016 (edited) I won a cruise on the Carnival Magic (November 12th Sailing from Port Canaveral) and a spot to play in the Wheel of Fortune 20th Anniversary $200K Spin N Sail Tournament. The contest I won also included a $1,000 visa gift card to use toward airfare and taxes. But other than that I have not yet received any other information. I would be interested to learn if anyone else has won one of these trips and if so, what cabin category . . . . The contest I won also included a $1,000 visa gift card to use toward airfare and taxes. But other than that I have not yet received any other information. Updated: Sorry! triptolemus Posted June 29, 2016 #9 Share Posted June 29, 2016 Better yet have you ever been a lucky winner of a cruise vacation? Back in 2003, my wife entered the HSUS Best Pet Friend Photo Contest. She almost hung up on them when they called to tell her she had won. What a hoot. Trip for 4 on the Norwegian Sun - back before she had her hull art! The prize included 2 OV cabins, deck 6 forward. 17cruisesnsl Posted June 29, 2016 #10 Share Posted June 29, 2016 Now I'm sure I spent too much of my BA vacation in the casino -- from the thread header, I thought someone won the progressive jackpot on a Wheel of Fortune slot machine in the BA casino! That's what I thought too! ... Better yet have you ever been a lucky winner of a cruise vacation? We got hooked on cruising by winning a 4 night Southern Caribbean cruise on RCI Nordic Empress (later renamed to Empress of the Seas) from Frommers Guidebooks. Included airfare to/from San Juan PR. Inside cabin. A few years later we won an awesome cruise around the boot of Italy from Bud Light beer. It was on Radisson (now Regent) Diamond, a twin-hulled catamaran. Balcony cabin. Included airfare to/from Italy, two nights pre-cruise hotel, and all transfers. 10K value. :) Edited June 29, 2016 by NMLady

I've seen people win trips and stuff "valued at $10K" I know I could get at a half or a third of that, so once you paid the taxes on 10K it would almost be cheaper to buy the trip yourself. Glad to see the IRS plays fair on the real value at least.
