Not flaming anyone (we took them on a couple of our cruises) however there are no "private" channels. It is a radio and can be easily monitored by others. The best you can hope for is using the PL tones (or ctcss/privacy tones, etc- they are marketed under many different names) to avoid hearing others on the same channel, unless they happen to be using the same tone that you are. Also, and more important, be careful using these in port and especially off the boat. Frequencies used in the US for these radios may have other uses in other countries (such as public safety) and you don't want to interfere with these communications or end up in trouble for doing so.
